One more big battle this year--in Washington, not Pakistan

Summary: And it's likely to be over global warming. Vested interests vs.

And it's likely to be over global warming. Vested interests vs. do-something advocates. Don't make us pay vs. fear of catastrophe. One top Democratic Congressman has promised to send President Obama a global warming bill before the end of 2009.

It's not likely this bill will be radical. Even many Dems are saying they want to be sure industry (read "Oil and coal interests") are OK with whatever's passed. We might see some sort of carbon emissions permit system, cap and trade. That will likely lead to another huge government giveaway, this time it will be permits to pollute. Pollution as another path to profit. Ain't capitalism grand? The global warming disbelievers now seem to be in distinct minority in Washington. [poll id="129"]

  • Cap and trade...

...is nothing but a shell game concocted by corporations and politicians to fool people into thinking that something is being done. And many people buy into it.

Sometimes doing nothing is better than doing the wrong thing.

One way or another--whether by cap and trade, carbon tax or sheer stakeholder pressure--organizations are going to have to measure, manage and lower their carbon footprints in the near future. The EPA's new proposed mandatory reporting rule for emitters of over 25K tons a year starting in 2011 for the year 2010 will get the ball rolling. Better to get ready now.
