Paleoclimate change, and nature dealing with today's changes

By | December 23, 2009, 4:01pm PST

Summary: Paleoclimate, modern climate and nature’s reaction.

It’s been much hotter on earth than it is now. Here’s a recent study describing one such period. The warming then was NOT human-caused we can be sure.

To read the whole article you need a subscription or pay a fee.

Another study just released shows that climate belts and ecosystems are migrating. Former lowland or low lattitude ecosystems are now expanding: upward in elevation or toward the poles. This will put heavy pressure on species that are specialists in survival in tundra, taiga and alpine habitats. That affects animals from the polar bear to the marmot to various ptarmigan.
I’ve blogged before about animals and plants altering their location and behavior in concert with the changing climate. They don’t bother to belabor data points or wait for some conference to tell them what to do. Wildlife plays the survival game very day and they must shift with the change or lose out.

The study found that in flat areas species may be moving toward the polar regions at a rate of one kilometer per year. The study estimates that only 10% of today’s parks and wildlife reserves will maintain their current ecosystems over the next century. That means many plants and animals seeking survival will inevitably clash with man’s use of much of the planet.

One day we might get some evidence
Richard Flude Updated - 23rd Dec 2009
"Another study just released shows that climate belts and ecosystems
are migrating."

Does it Harry? Let's look at your link:

"The research team, which included researchers from the Carnegie
Institution, Stanford University, the California Academy of Sciences,
and the University of California, Berkeley, combined data on current
climate and temperature gradients worldwide with climate model
projections for the next century to calculate the "temperature velocity"
for different regions of the world."
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2009-12/ci-ccp122109.php

So it actually shows what climate models predict. The same "climate
models" shown to be unable to accurately predict past known
climate and continue to diverge from observable reality. But I'm sure
they'll be right here;-)

Climate change has always occurred (as geological records show),
regional climate variations happen even faster. Neither is evidence for
AGW.

Merry Xmas anyway Harry, I hope the snow hasn't destroyed any of
your plans. I look forward to the followup article on the effect the
post Copenhagen temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere has had
on the Mets predictions for 2009 being one of the hottest on record;-)

Global warming will make entire China to become either Gobi deserts or typoon lakes.
It's interesting to see how flippant some people can be. Do i believe in global warming, no i don't, i KNOW it happens, history has shown that.

It's irrelevant whether this period of climate change is human induced or a natural occurrence.... it's getting warmer and although as humans, we are not as sensitive to the changes (and are pretty much adaptable, we've got AC and central heating:0), there are many lifeforms who/which are sensitive to even the slightest change in climate.

There's one point most people seem to be missing, yes we have recorded and studied history to find that climate change seems/is a natural occurrence (no human attributions), we also know that it had a drastic affect on wildlife(some adapted, some moved and some died).

Some say whats new, its all happened before and where still here, WHATS NEW!!!! a 6 billion population and billions or even trillions of metric tons of brick and mortar surfacing our planet, have we ever experienced/recorded climate change at a time when the planet had a 6 billion population of human beings and over 100+ industrialized nations?

I'm not about to say that this could spell doom, far from it but neither would i say its not something to be concerned about, simple put, it's a first and maybe we should be just a little more cautious, hindsight would be a great thing but we don't have that satisfaction so wouldn't it be wise to be prepared for any eventuality(within our capacity), as opposed to be sitting in the aftermath saying if only we knew.
Even without climate change, just by the ever encroaching housing cycles of mankind, we're in direct competition with animal populations (bears and cougars in backyards and garbage bins) because of our ever expanding growth patterns and preservation of animal groups without relocation of such (e.g., if you're bears are on a protected and endangered list, you really shouldn't move into their territory and expect no interactions). We spread out and balloon in population, wasting the cityscape we've already used and in some cases abandoned to economic decline and urban decay. So we as humans have had a migrating impact on the animal kingdom since before we learned to fence in our yards and cities, there's just way more of us doing this century.

So, at the most extreme measures taken by mankind to attack the man-made influences of 'global warming', what will be the result on man-made impacts and what factor will natural causes play in the success rate, and what is success? Isn't the cycle too far along for reversal, as science knows of it today? Not that I'm against changes, I'll just always state fight Global Pollution, because yelling fight Global Warming is like saying if you stand on each others shoulders you can touch the moon. People can grasp the impact of pollution and have measured ways of dealing with it, . . . versus the political charged and maligned fight of the other rally call.
