Power management software now supports Intel-based Macs

By | June 10, 2010, 6:00am PDT

1E, one of the more aggressive software companies in the power management space, has released a version of its NightWatchman software for Apple’s Macintosh operating system.

The application allows you to control when power saving features are switched on and off, without affecting the productivity of the people using the systems. The big deal is that administrators can now manage both Mac and Windows systems together from the same console, according to the company.

The company says the new software will help shore up its competitive position in early adopter corporate environments that have embraced the Mac, as well as in education accounts and creative businesses. The release meets requirements for the Common Criteria for IT Security Assurance; it works on Intel-based Macs, which is a bummer for people like me who have some older equipment, but it’s a start. It supports Mac OS X 10.5.8, 10.6.2 and 10.6.3 operating systems.

You can download a demo copy of the software and try before you buy.

Writing publicly about what the high-tech industry is actually doing to help itself and the world get greener or more sustainable is one way I figure I can contribute more meaningfully to said effort. I am also a big OMG-kind-of-fan of smart leadership, which is why the goodly folks who publish this blog let me go on about this topic and why I am always on the hunt for forward-looking business management ideas.

My daily writing is focused on looking for topics for my blogs, GreenTech Pastures and Business Brains. I also write often about emerging technology trends such as mobile computing, unified communications and cloud computing. Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where a speaking engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and the topics that I am covering in my blog.

NightWatchman for Macs is not designed to address an individual requirement. It is to allow those organisations who have a mix of Windows and Mac to deploy one single consolidated power management solution. One solution, one console, one power policy that can address all client desktops and provide comprehensive reporting data in a single place; reflecting the overall power consumption of that organisation.

Mac OS X has great energy-saving features.
Set it and forget it.
When my iMac sleeps it draws 1.2 watts. And, it sleeps after just 15 minutes of inactivity.

I don't see the point of Nightwatchman for Mac users.
