Really want a green job? Here are the 10 cities with the most action

By | July 12, 2010, 7:20am PDT

While I was cruising the various green tech sites this morning catching up on my reading, I came across this item from TreeHugger (courtesy of another site, Mother Nature Network) listing the 10 best cities where graduates might find green-tech or clean-tech jobs.

I’m sure it won’t shock you to hear that San Francisco is #1, but it might intrigue you to hear that auto-friendly region Detroit and oil-industry haven Houston also make the list. The hybrid and electric car funding are fueling new jobs in Michigan and don’t count out Texas when it comes to renewable energy.

The post includes stats, the focus of the region’s green investment, and information about the policies that are making job creation possible. The other cities that made the list include:

  • Denver
  • New York
  • Portland
  • Los Angeles
  • Sacramento
  • Boston
  • Phoenix

Writing publicly about what the high-tech industry is actually doing to help itself and the world get greener or more sustainable is one way I figure I can contribute more meaningfully to said effort. I am also a big OMG-kind-of-fan of smart leadership, which is why the goodly folks who publish this blog let me go on about this topic and why I am always on the hunt for forward-looking business management ideas.

My daily writing is focused on looking for topics for my blogs, GreenTech Pastures and Business Brains. I also write often about emerging technology trends such as mobile computing, unified communications and cloud computing. Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where a speaking engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and the topics that I am covering in my blog.

Why no non-US cities?
Our advice for job-seekers? Green-ify your job search. Sustainable management is not just for green jobs. Sustainability is emerging in every area of business: sustainable marketing, sustainable supply chain management, triple bottom line accounting . . . Every job confronts sustainability issues. Understanding the intersections of the systems at work?natural systems, social systems, and business systems?is critical to every aspect of how we live and work. Become eco-literate and increase your hireability and promotability.

get skilled in traditional energy technology. You'll be needed when green tech comes crashing down. Because physics isn't interested in your vision of utopia.

Now I know what cities to boycott!

(hey, if they can boycott Arizona for trying to protect its citizens, I can boycott them for being stupid)
