The majority of Walmart's sites in Arizona and Californai will utilize thin film panels as seen on the Mountain View, Calif., store.

Although some corporate sustainability experts have questioned the massive retailer's progress on its environmental and social agendas, Walmart continues to blaze forward when it comes to renewable energy projects.

The company has completed its 100th solar technology installation with the addition of six stores in Colorado, integrated and managed by SolarCity. Collectively, the installations are supposed to generate roughly 3 million kilowatt-hours or electricity annually, according to Walmart and SolarCity. The installations in Colorado represent a total of 2 megawatts in solar generation capacity.

Walmart's long-term goal is to switch to renewable energy sources for all of its stores and warehouse locations. SolarCity has been responsible for installations in Arizona, California and Colorado. Last September, the retailer said it would add solar to 60 more stores in California.

By the end of 2013, Walmart will have installed solar on more than 130 stores in California, 75 percent of the stores in the state.
