10 year old fixes iPhone screen - Total cost: $21.95

Summary: This is awesome, and should serve as a incentive to others to try to repair broken kit.

This is awesome, and should serve as a incentive to others to try to repair broken kit.

Brett did the whole thing for a little more than $20, but you can do it for even cheaper, depending on where and from whom you buy your kit. The five small tools in the first photo with Brett were all sent with the replacement screen, as was the replacement precut double-stick 3M tape to affix the new screen to the body of the iPhone. Total cost of screen, with tools and tape plus shipping and handling, was $21.95. Brett’s father notes that he chose the seller because he had “very good comments and was in New York, so I knew I would get it quick.”

The whole operation took about 40 minutes. Brett’s father pocketed the $178.05 in savings, and claims he’ll put it toward the boy’s future college tuition. A likely story.

If it's broken and he can't fix it...

@John Zern
Is it still broken? Just an observation. When I am messing with something that is not working, and someone points out "You will never be able to fix it", I ask them the same "If I can't fix it, is it still broken?". grin
I was a whiz at dis-assembly at 10. It the reassembly that was problematic.

@chris@...

Was it the same as me? Always a trinket left over?
@chris@... I too remember dis-assembling a mechanical spring driven alarm clock at about the same age, maybe even a little younger. This iPhone screen replacement looks far simpler than re-assembling the clock was to me.

With my encouragement (I'm physically unable now) and long-distance help of her two brothers, my wife is fixing our 6 year old Kenmore/Whirlpool washer. She's had a bump or two along the way, but she's getting it done.

Apple can't stand for this kind of dissemination of it's intellectual property. Just look at the photo, there are electrical components of various types inside their phone. Apple, let the hounds loose, teach this 10 year old a lesson, at the very least, sue him for the savings him and his father realized.

Don't forget to tell Apple to send in the SWAT teams as well to collect all of their things as evidence!

Great job but I add a caution

I had a broken screen and was going to fix it but found a local (3 blocks away) who did it in less than 10 minutes and for $80. He guarantees his work and swears it will pass inspection to retain warranty (something about stickers). HOWEVER, most of his business now is replacement of the LCD modules for people who try to replace the screens. That adds $100 to the repair cost. Apparently they are really delicate and any pressure on them destroys them.

...12 and a half cents for the plastic, if the repair was done at the device's Pingguo home factory, where it was made.

Dont do it

I tried to do this - ordered the kit.

I couldn't get one of the screws off (very fiddly) - and broke the LCD levering it off (its VERY sensitive).

I assume this kid has previous experience? I wouldn't let a random 10 year old near it myself - its ridicously easy to screw it up doing this.

I ended up sending it away AND needing to purchase a new LCD.
