100,000 Sony batteries recalled

Summary: About 100,000 Sony Lithium-Ion batteries used in Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba and Dell notebooks have been recalled. 35,000 batteries of these batteries were sold in the US.

About 100,000 Sony Lithium-Ion batteries used in Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba and Dell notebooks have been recalled. 35,000 of these batteries were sold in the US.

Some details about these batteries:

  • They were sold at the same time as the batteries involved in the widescale 2006 Sony battery recall.
  • These batteries can "overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers."
  • The damage so far: "There have been 19 reports of the batteries overheating, including 17 reports of flames/fire (10 resulting in minor property damage). Two consumers experienced minor burns."
  • Affected system include: - HP (accounting for some 32,000 of the 35,000 sold in the US) HP Pavilion: dv1000, dv8000 and zd8000 Compaq Presario: v2000 and v2400 HP Compaq: nc6110, nc6120, nc6140, nc6220, nc6230, nx4800, nx4820, nx6110, nx6120, nx9600 - Toshiba (about 3,000) Satellite: A70/A75, P30/P5, M30X/M35X, M50/M55 Tecra: A3, A5, S2 - Dell (about 150) Latitude: 110L Inspiron: 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150, 5160

    This isn't their first recall... all they seem to be doing is
    p*ssing money away by bothering...

    Hint for Sony: don't make batteries.

    I agree these batteries are not safe and Manufacturers need to be answerable for the quality and safety of their products but if we think that these are the only li-ion batteries that are very dangerous its time we all take our head out of the sand and acknowledge that just because we don't think of batteries like we would a pot of hot oil doesn't mean their any safer just more acceptable.

    And why is it Sony that are involved with recalls, because they suck and are unsafe or because the vast majority of batteries are built by Sony and the law of averages shows this would happen.

  • Why not recall them all Sony, it seems like a new recall each yr

    though it isn't so, it feels like it. This kind of Deja Vu is very very bad for Sony. I'd have no trust in their batteries and wonder what they can do for the future to avoid such recalls and insure quality of product. Maybe just get out of the business altogether.

    A company in California, ZPower, might have a good solution to this ongoing problem. It is introducing a silver-zinc laptop battery that is non-combustible and will provide significantly more power than lithium batteries. Might be worth keeping an eye on them. www.Zpowerbattery.com
