3rd gen iPod touch contains an 802.11n-capable WiFi chip

The fantastic folks from iFixit have got their hands on a brand new, hot out of the factory 3rd gen iPod touch. So what do they do with it? Tear it apart!

So, what did they discover? Well, two interesting things.

  • First, the 3rd gen iPod touch is home to a Broadcom BCM4329FKUBG wireless chip. According to the Broadcom spec sheet, this chip supports 802.11n.

There also a Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and a FM receiver and transmitter packed into that chip
What’s extra interesting is that not even the iPhone 3GS has support for 802.11n.
  • There also seems to be room in the iPod touch for an iPod nano style camera.

By now you should know how we’ll get 802.11n support … at some point in the future Apple will release an update, but because it’ll be “adding a new feature” it’ll claim that we have to pay $10 for the update, even though primarily it’ll consist of bug fixes, minor improvements and more integration with the iTunes Store. It sucks, but its the way it is.

Great work iFixit!

Bitter much? If it's Apple it's bad?

A - It will be a new feature - no 'claim' about it.

B - Look backwards at the enhancements that original Touch owners
have had to what they bought, and what they've had to pay for it. App
store ring any bells? Tell me the value was poor in that situation? Or
was that just the capitalist lackeys at Apple plotting to remove that
last $10 from your wallet?

Big mistake for the more video focussed iPod touch.
The iPod can't compete now with the Cowon S9 and the Zune HD on screenquality and the iPod touch is massifly more heavy than the really light weight Zune HD competition which has a lot more energy economical screen and multi core processor and thus needs a smaller battery.
one reason i hate apple they give you the hardware BUT YOU CAN'T USE IT, people who say microsoft is greedy look at apple they give you a toy but you cant use it till later, then later comes around and YOU HAVE TO PUT MORE MONEY in to get the toys you have.

First of all they are not selling it as a feature of the iTouch are they?
Maybe they haven't activated it yet because of some power issues that
will be worked out in a future version of the OS? Now it has never
always been the case that when Apple gives you new stuff to play for you
HAVE to pay for it. I can recall a lot of new stuff in free system updates
from Apple over the years. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Its not a
given. Still they did not sell this iTouch with that as a listed feature did
they? I think not.

Just because the chip supports 802.11n and FM Tx/Rx doesn't mean that Apple will use it. Combo chips these days pack a lot of functionality, but getting it to work is not always very simple. Things may not operate well together, the antennae may not be OK, the firmware may not be stable enough etc. Very often, the reason some functionality that's available in the chip hardware is disabled in the software, not because of any marketing or software development reason, but because the functionality doesn't work as intended.

Don't hold your breath.
Just want to point out AT&T has nothing to do with the ITouch. Here is Apple putting a feature on a device that it will later "turn on" {Wifi}.

AT&T, though deserving of some criticism, is crucified for not turning on the iphone's MMS by the late summer deadline. And before you say it, yes the MMS seems to be more an AT&T network issue than an Apple issue. Regardless, sometimes AT&T gets the punch in the mouth when Apple is the one holding the proverbial bag.

What a pity it doesn't with camera like nano 5g.
But as iTouch, it's still worth to get when back to school.
Fortunally, third part software like dvd to ipod converter can make itouch more funny to play dvd movie and so on.

And iPhone owners didn't have to pay the same fee because...? Why does one class of users get their bug fixes/security upgrades for free, and not others?

If you want to charge for new features, fine, but:

-charge everyone
-publish security/bug fixes for free.
