Are you an Angry Birds addict that plays on an Android device? If so, I have some interesting news for you.

Rovio is planning an update to its wildly successful game called Angry Birds Rio, but this game will only be available to Android users via the Amazon Appstore, and will not be offered through the Google Android Market.

This exclusive is a pretty big win for Amazon and should give drive some traffic to its Android Appstore.

Here's the press release:

Angry Birds Rio for Android to Debut Exclusively in the Amazon Appstore

AUSTIN, Texas/ ESPOO, Finland - March 14, 2011 - Rovio today announced that the highly anticipated game Angry Birds Rio will be introduced for the Android platform exclusively in the Amazon Appstore. Developed in conjunction with Twentieth Century Fox, Angry Birds Rio features the animated stars of the studio's upcoming motion picture, RIO. Additionally, for the first time ever on the Android platform, fans of Angry Birds games will have the opportunity to purchase and download ad-free versions of Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons. Both will debut only in the Amazon Appstore.

"The Android platform has seen phenomenal growth, and it's great that new avenues for app distribution are opening up," said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. "The openness of the Android platform works for the benefit of consumers and developers alike. It has been delightful to team up with Amazon to bring the Angry Birds franchise to this great new application marketplace."

"Amazon is thrilled to work with a leading developer like Rovio in offering our customers Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusively in the Amazon Appstore," said Aaron Rubenson, category leader for Amazon Appstore. "We think Angry Birds Rio is sure to be an instant customer favorite."

"Angry Birds Rio is a fun and interactive way to introduce millions of fans to the exciting world of 'RIO,' and we are proud to work with both Rovio and Amazon to make this experience available to users on the Android platform," said Peter Levinsohn, president of new media and digital distribution for Twentieth Century Fox. "The Amazon Appstore will be a great new way for consumers to download all their favorite Android apps, and we're excited to offer Angry Birds Rio as one of the first pieces of content to be made available to consumers through this new store."

In Angry Birds Rio, the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio, where they eventually escape their captors and set out to save their friends, Blu and Jewel - two rare macaws and the stars of the upcoming Fox motion picture, RIO. From the creators of Fox's blockbuster ICE AGE motion picture franchise, RIO debuts in theaters worldwide on April 15, 2011. Angry Birds Rio will launch with 60 dedicated levels, with more content to follow via app updates.

  • Angry Birds rolls on

I have to hand it to Rivo, they have marketed Angry Birds well, though the exclusivity of Rio to just the Android via Amazon Appstore is kind of annoying for us non-Android users :(.
    • RE: Amazon grabs Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusive

How to solve the problem? Get an Android device. They're better than iOS, WP7, PalmOS, and Blackberry devices anyway.
      • RE: Amazon grabs Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusive

@Droid101 Your answer was to drop a great working smartphone for a game? There's nothing wrong with his choice of phone. Your bias is abvious in your name.
      • You should hate the Amazon Roid store...

Amazon is a walled garden for Roid... They screen apps for quality and malware... Just like Apple does... Granted the Google Roid store is still a festering cesspool of virii and malware. But that is beside the point... How dare Amazon have a walled garden for Roids!!! Roid morons don't want quality apps... They want malware and stolen identities.

Do you people (you know, you, the crazies, fanbois of any OS,etc.) ever going to realized that you are annoying and come across as stupid and simpletons because it seems that is all you guys have to say.
People use other devices (let me treat you like you treat others!) that are so much better than Android. Hell, my old Samsung Instinct running whatever OS it had was way better than this new Android piece of crap I have. Are you happy now? An intelligent person knows that the experience with IOS is way better than Android, why do you keep pushing? Because you are a robot following the main Android robot! You can't think for yourself or clearly enough to realized that even Honeycomb is a patched up job that will not compare to IOS now or in he future. Once Windows gets in the act of tablets, Android devices will be relegated to the under $150 market.
Have you played with the Galaxy Tab, the Xoom and the Ipad? I have and for many weeks with each. You have to be like you, a crazy, to believe that those others come close to the Ipad experience. And I am not even an Apple person, I waiting for a Windows tablet to come along but I have enough common sense to understand what is a better product and a better buy for my money. I am not proselitizing like you.
Go back to your church and your religion and pray there alone!
      • RE: Amazon grabs Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusive

I forgot to tell you in my prior reply. The release on Amazon only pertains to Android. The apple app store already has Rio for Ipad, Iphone, Itouch, etc.
So who need to buy what again? Just get a life, find a girlfriend (if you can), and find something else to do.
We are all sorry for people like you. My God, it must be so empty to all you have to do and get excited about is a thing like an operating system.
I am so sorry my boy!
    • 'Rio' is not exclusive to Android

Angry Birds Rio will be released for iOS at the same time it becomes available for Android. What's "exclusive" is that the Android version will only be available from Amazon.

@Robert Hahn And everyone with an Android device on AT&T (maybe others) will not be able to download this since AT&T locks their Android devices out from being able to install non-market apps. If it doesn't come from the stock android market you have to either use sideload wonder machine to install it, or modify the files on the phone to remove the "Untrusted Applications" lock.

I got a Xperia x10 from AT&T and it didn't even have the option for Untrusted Applications in the settings menu.
      • RE: Amazon grabs Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusive

        @Robert Hahn
Nope the exclusive part is angry birds rio will be availiable to android user only at amazon. No iphone version announced for rio to iphone.
      • Angry Birds Online

        @Robert Hahn
It's nice to see that theres a company thats good enough to take on the android marketplace and itunes, with Amazon they've just got so much buying power. Personally I prefer playing angry birds rio online but the android app will be welcome too!
    • RE: Amazon grabs Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusive

did you read the article? it said exclusive for the amazon store if you are on android. it is coming out on iphone also i checked online.
    • Angry Birds became popular by word of mouth not marketing

@MikeaCoughlin The marketing started after Rovio made $25M in sales. At that time, the $25M was made thanks to word of mouth from users.
    • RE: Amazon grabs Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusive

  • "Debuts", "introduced" on Amazon

It sounds to me like the exclusiveness is only for a very short initial period.
    • RE: Amazon grabs Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusive

@daboochmeister That was my take on it as well. I thought the choice of wording said as much as anything.
  • RE: Amazon grabs Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusive

"should give drive some traffic "
  • The downsides...

Exclusive only for amazon appstore also means that A LOT of countries won't be able to benefit from this at all. To me it looks like only the US is going to be able to download in the first place, and by the time it gets to the other countries, we will have to pay!
