Amazon invests in Foxit, better PDF support inbound for Kindle

By | December 6, 2011, 2:10pm PST

Summary: Better PDF support coming to Kindle hardware and software.

Amazon has made an investment in Foxit Corporation to bring better PDF support to Kindle hardware and software.

The Kindle already supports PDF software (but from experience I’ll tell you that it’s nothing to brag about), but Amazon hopes that by working with Foxit it can ”make the customer experience for PDFs on Kindle even better.”

The terms of the investment were not disclosed.

“Kindle has long supported PDF as a document format that is independent of application software, hardware, or operating systems,” said Jeff Blackburn, senior vice president, business development, Amazon.com. “Foxit has an industry-leading PDF technology that we think will make the customer experience for PDFs on Kindle even better — we’re excited to back such a great team.”

It’s likely that Amazon is interested in Foxit for more than just rendering PDF documents, and we could see PDF editing and annotating coming to the Kindle.

Regular readers will know that I’m a big fan of the Foxit PDF reader and have recommended it here on several occasions. The Foxit PDF reader is a solid product and an excellent replacement for the Adobe PDF Reader.

Amazon made the right choice.

Like you, I've /always/ used Foxit, over that bloatware called Adobe reader. I also recommend to everyone, and even on the company's e-mails. There's a disclaimer to use Foxit reader over adobe.
Sounds great. Although in the meantime I started using Calibre to convert PDF's to MOBI's, and it is freely available on Win/Mac/Linux. So far it has done an awesome job converting PDF's to Kindle native MOBI's which are very readable on my Fire, unlike the PDF's. Long PDF's on the Fire are intolerable. Short ones are *tolerable*, since you don't have to read them for very long, but the MOBI's that I converted from PDF are easy to read. Not as good as a native MOBI, but it is still quite nice.

Like kcredden2, I use Foxit when on a Windows workstation (on Linux I just use the built in reader *most* of the time). I've found Foxit quite nice/slender/FAST compared to the bloated Adobe PDF reader. I've got a lot of faith that a Foxit reader on the Fire will be pretty good. (don't let me down Foxit/Amazon)

Great news.

This is an excellent move. I haven't touched that bug infested bloatware called Adobe Acrobat / reader for years. A 68MB download on my mac just to read a PDF? Adobe thinks we're all lobotomized. No thanks.
Foxit portable is light and fast, works well on my Win7 machine.
