Amazon removes Kindle Store button from iOS app

By | July 25, 2011, 10:52am PDT

Summary: Amazon updates its Kindle app for iOS and removes the button to take readers to its Kindle Store.

Amazon has updated it: Kindle app for iOS and removed the button to take readers to its Kindle Store.

Note: It doesn’t seem that you have to upgrade, so if you don’t want the Facebook and Twitter integration, you can stick with the old version for now.

Earlier this month it had seemed as though the button that gave users easy access to the Kindle Store was here to stay, but it seems that Apple’s updated guidelines DO apply to Amazon, and this button in particular.

Along with removing the button, Amazon has added Facebook and Twitter integration to allow the easy sharing of quotes and passages with friends and followers.

Has Apple won? I don’t think so. It’s easy enough to fire up the browser and type www.amazon.com … this change isn’t going to make me switch to the iBooks store.

RE: And it's gone - Amazon removes Kindle Store button from iOS app
Heenan73 Updated - 26th Jul
Apple, like the M$ of old, have their fingers in too many overlapping pies. I can see why they Ban the Button in purely commercial terms; but it will damage them in the long run, as Google will never be so restrictive with Android (simply because they can't, and don't cross promote on that business model.)

They'll get away with it for now, but by the time we get to iPhone 7, their 'cool advantage' will be gone, and they'll increasingly lose market share. And it'll be too late for a u-turn (not that their accountants would allow such a common sense approach).
I wouldn't have catered. I'm sad to see Amazon did.
@Cylon Centurion this my friends, is why I fear Apple. What makes you think they will not limit user on what sites to access through safari? they will create a list of pre-approved sites.
@tatiGmail

Tin foil is in the room. Apple doesn't care what a user does with safari or what sites he/she visits. Put the hat away. happy
@tatiGmail
I agree, although doing something like that via Safari does not seem feasible. The good news is that customers have choices - lots of them. Android phones are right there with the iPhone in terms of capabilities/features. For now, Apple wins. If Apple crosses the line customers will rebel.
@tatiGmail
HMMM, maybe you have something here, but no one is willing to believe it. Hitler took small steps to his real goal so maybe this is one small step on the way to Apple's true goal.
Maybe there will be a safari change where you cannot buy from amazon through the web browser either. DOES anyone REALLY think this is far off or do you think this is beyond what apple will do? I sure don't. DON"T HOLD IT THAT WAY!!!!
Every day I'm getting to be less of an Apple fan. The Kindle app has been so important to me on my iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touches (yes I have two). Hobbling it is insanity on Apple's part. Combine that with what Mobile Me has been doing to my data (in its death throes, I guess), and I'm really re-considering my loyalty here. User convenience is where both Amazon and Apple have it over other companies. If they spoil things by not getting along, surely they are just cutting off their noses?
@Lyn678
What does this remind you of? Apple circa 1980's. There is always ways around it but Apple is supposed to be simple and easy-to-use. Now customers must go outside the Apple ecosystem to get Kindle books. The war has just been escalated.
This is why I don't have Apple products. They are the bully of today like Microsoft was in the past. Don't get me wrong I think Apple makes great products, but they never drop the prices like most other businesses do and they dictate everything. I'm okay not owning an apple product.
@bwills80
Ah... yes they do drop prices. Take a look at the price of the original iPad and prior versions of the iPhone. You only pay top dollar for the latest and greatest - just like every other manufacturer out there.
