I just received this question in today's mailbag:

AMD What's the deal with AMD's new "Black Edition" Athlon 64 X2 5000+?  Seems to be identical to the standard X2 5000+.  Don't tell me it's just a different box!

You're almost right.  The "Black Edition" Athlon 64 X2 5000+ is almost identical to the standard edition X2 5000+.  The clock speed is the same (2.6GHz), the L2 cache is the same size (1MB) and both have a TDP of 65W.  The only difference between the two is that the "Black Edition" X2 5000+ has an unlocked clock multiplier which allows overclocking enthusiasts to overclock the processor without having to adjust the HyperTransport clock.  This release proves that AMD is interested in enticing enthusiasts back into the AMD fold, but I think that the company needs to try a lot harder.

Unless you're an overclocker there's nothing to see here ... move along.  And if you are an overclocker, you're better off going with a processor from the Core 2 Duo range.

  • If this were Phenom... This would be interesting

Although I would want to see the bill of materials on a PC before I bought it after the release of the processor.

    • Agreed

      That would be interesting.

    • Phenom is only 10-15 percent faster than K8 X2s

Phenom is only 10-15 percent faster than K8 X2s which means it's actually slower than K8 X2s since the clock speeds scheduled to be launched is 2.6 GHz dual-core at the end of the year which is substantially lower than the X2 6400+ 3.2 GHz processor.

      • Don't you have your own column....

.....to show your disgust for AMD, George?

  • This is putting lipstick on a pig

Let's face it, Athlon is yesterday's news. It's a great chip but those who buy "xxxxxx edition" of anything are the "hey look at me crowd".

Phenom is what these buyers want. This is a marketing ploy to sell what is now an obsolete product to produce (I'll use PIG for special effect) and slapping on a new shade of lipstick

    • Yep - you got it right

But let's face it, CPUs have already outstripped the needs (or use) of the vast majority of desktop PC users.
