AMD debuts new low-power AMD embedded G-Series APU

AMD has added a low-power G-T16R Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) to the Embedded G-Series line up.

The AMD G-T16R isn't a desktop piece, but rather a very-low-power part aimed at small form factor and cost-sensitive embedded designs that require both x86 compatibility and graphics. Examples of systems that can benefit from the G-T16R APU include digital signage, x86 set-top-boxes, information kiosk, point-of-sale devices, casino gaming devices, and media servers.

The AMD Embedded G-Series platform is the world's first integrated circuit to combine a low-power CPU and a discrete-level GPU into a single embedded Accelerated Processing Unit (APU).

The power-optimized design of the single-core, 615MHz AMD Embedded G-T16R processor features a 4.5 watt thermal design power (TDP), and has an average power consumption of 2.3 watts. The graphics are powered by an AMD Radeon HD 6250 GPU with the graphics core clocked at 276MHz.

"It's critical that the latest AMD Embedded G-Series APUs provide compatibility with existing x86 processors while supporting the latest interface technologies," said Jim McGregor, principal analyst of TIRIAS Research.

"Having a simple migration path allows engineers to develop robust designs using the latest DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort display technologies."

"With the AMD G-T16R APU, we were striving for that critical balance of performance, power efficiency and cost for power, and cost-sensitive embedded applications, and we've achieved it," said Arun Iyengar, corporate vice president and general manager, AMD Embedded Solutions.

The G-T16R APU offers a cost-effective upgrade path for users of AMD's Geode LX processor platform. The new APU consumes about 7 percent less power while offering three times the performance of the 2.45 watt Geode LX processor. Also, the overall footprint of the chip is reduced by 58 percent. Support for the latest DDR3 memory helps reduce memory costs for legacy applications while enabling higher memory speed and capacity.

A variety of AMD customers are announcing small form factor motherboards designed around the legacy I/O and low power support of the AMD G-T16R APU, including:

  • Advantech PCM-3356 PC/104 CPU module;
  • Aewin PM-6161 PC/104 board;
  • Arbor EmETX-a55E0 ETX CPU module;
  • aValue ECM-A50M 3.5-inch embedded motherboard;
  • Axiomtek CM100 COM Express module;
  • MEN Mikro Elektronik SC24 computer-on-module.

Along with the announcement of the new AMD G-T16R APU, AMD is also extending the planned availability for the entire AMD Embedded G-Series processor family through 2017, resetting the five-year clock for both existing and new designs.

    Looks like the ARM collaboration is going to be the deathblow to Nvidia. Should have sold out too Intel when they had the chance, instead of letting Intel steal their proprietary knowledge and develop on-board graphics.
    As more people are getting wise into the Unfair practices of Intel's bribery to the likes of Dell, HP and others, AMD is going to pick up a lot of slack. Their discrete graphic cards are killing Nvidia, and Intel is way behind the game. I've even heard murmurs that AMD is going to be powering the PS4 as they already power the Wii. AMD said they weren't worried about the tablet market, now we see why.
