AMD defends decision to bin ATI brand

By | September 3, 2010, 4:17am PDT

Following screams and howls from enthusiasts who are attached to brands and branding, AMD defends its decision to ditch the ATI graphics brand.

AMD Corporate Vice President John Volkmann takes the stage to try to restore calm:

First, we learned that the “Radeon” brand is as strong as any other product or company brand in terms of awareness and consideration. Oh, there are regional differences in favor of one brand or another - but in general, Radeon is well established as a leader in this segment.

Second, preference for the AMD brand is stronger against the competition than the ATI brand. This isn’t to say the ATI brand isn’t strong… it says that enthusiasts assign higher brand preference to the AMD brand. And it is a nice complement to the Radeon-related finding mentioned above.

Third - and this was the clincher - those who know that AMD and ATI merged score their brand preference for AMD three times higher than those who are not aware of the merger. In other words, if you know we are one company, you believe in us more. On the other hand, by keeping the brands distinct, we were actually limiting or handicapping our own brand strength.

In short, we needed to make ‘the move.’

Well, in short, I hope that it was the right move to make. AMD really can’t afford to stumble right now, even if that is a PR stumble. Bottom line, I think that AMD might have been better off ditching the brand right from the beginning following acquisition rather than hang on to it for a few years like it did. People expect change with a new broom, but retaining the brand gave fanboys the hope that it would remain forever.

A poll on a previous post seemed to suggest that 50% of you thought it was a bad move for AMD to drop the ATI brand, while 36% thought it was a good idea.

I think it is a great call on AMD side, AMD is a better brand and will soon be better brand than INTEL. I always loved the ATI graphics over NVIDIA they are at great price and great performance. Especially with new eyeinfinity graphics cards which blow the NVIDIA brand out of the water that was AMD move on that.

Good will tax write off. Sounds like AMD has decided to flush a lot of good will too.

AMD = Lower end affordable CPU's. Ex: KIA, Suzuki's in the auto marketplace.
ATI = High end graphics card comparable to Nvidia. Ex: Toyota, Nissan, and Honda.
It is a no brainer which name I would chose over the other...

ATI has been on my *hit list since '97 for their long track record of orphaning cards when new OSes come out.

@wkulecz
ATI has been on my *hit list since '97 for their long track record of orphaning cards when new OSes come out.

so many other hardware makers are guilty of this. The list is shameless really, Netgear, Creative, blah, blah, blah rinse + repeat x100, especially when the orphans in question are but a few years out of the cradle.

This is one area I cut MS extra slack on the SW side of things, whereas they've always kept one eye focused on the legacy track and bridging support. Looking past their infamous arm twisting tactics, it's one of the reasons they maintain a 90% MS ( M arket Share, go figure wink ) on the desktop platform front.

Trivia question
aberkae Updated - 3rd Sep 2010
What does ATI stand for?
FYI. enthusiast do not care about branding. They care about performance! based on AMD's Radeon 6000 series gpus launching in a few week(s)/month(s), if it does perform as rumored 20% better then the GTX 480, if priced right, every enthusiast/ gamer will want it! and its not ATI brand lol, Bulldozer is not ATI brand either and already it has a huge wish list.
How can they AXE AMD brand ? AMD's world trade symbol is wait for it>>>> AMD! lol

answer. Array Technologies Incorporated
who cares!

Still think its bad

ATI is recognized for being a strong graphics card brand. AMD Graphics cards sound like Intel Graphics, processor graphics sound lame. I agree that radeon is a strong brand overall, but its boring to have AMD graphics cards, atleast I think.

@Jimster480 what about intel's larrabee? does not sound that lame.
ok, so ATI fans will have 2 choices
1) still buy the same GPUs just renamed AMD still Radeon,
2) or buy Nvidia GPUs
Hmm which one do you think they'll buy?
My guess is not Nvidia.
