CPU and GPU giant AMD has announced a deal with Valve to use its Steam games distribution platform to deliver Catalyst driver updates to users.

Steam is a no-hassle platform. Not only does it allow you to by games over the Internet, it also applies patches and updates automatically without the hassles of having to trawl websites for the right download, bringing them in and them remembering to apply them. Now Radeon users will see that same convenience applied to driver updates.

AMD's corporate VP Ben Bar-Haim had the following to say:

"AMD Gaming Evolved and Valve share the belief that Gamers Come First. We now have the opportunity to work together to help ensure the best possible experience for PC gamers."

Valve's Jason Holtman added:

"PC gamers demand the most of their gaming hardware and providing these updates automatically will help ensure those playing via Steam are playing at optimal performance."

I think that this is a great idea, but I do hope that it offers users an easy way to roll-back to an earlier driver if things go wrong.

There's no word on when this service will roll out, but rumor has it that it will be in place for the next update, Catalyst 10.9.

Official word that the first update to roll down the Steam pipeline will be Catalyst 10.9.

As long as you can still download the drivers manually, I don't have a problem. If they force people to use the pile of crap, that is Steam, then I'll sell my 5850 in a flash.

@LeeC Steam is not that bad these days. it was way worse before. But it has improved alot over the years. But I do agree that it would be ridiculous to have to get updates Via steam.

I am not so sure about that. Some people are STUPID and don't download a new driver for months or years, then wonder why their system is not working 'as fast' as it was before.

I was guilty of that at one time, now I have a 'driver update day' where that is all I do on my home and work PC's.

Will it be for all cards? Including laptop cards? because it can be a real PITA to update laptop graphics card drivers.

If Steam is just an extra option, Well I am well good with that as I prefer to use some of the older Cat drivers as some new ones have killed my games at times...

I tried the 10.9 update via Steam, and I didn't care for it. It automatically installed the Communication Opt-In and the Transcoding Drag-and-Drop features that I never choose to install when I install the driver manually (with the Custom option). At least it didn't automatically install the Lord of the Rings trial that the manual install method encourages (but I avoid).
