AMD up for sale? Dell interested?

Summary: Rumors are circulating that AMD is up for sale, and that Dell might be interested in purchasing the chip giant.

Rumors are circulating that AMD is up for sale, and that Dell might be interested in purchasing the chip giant.

Shares in the company were up around 5% yesterday on the rumors, which seem to have originated with Barrow's:

I would say the recent departures of senior executives — COO Robert Rivet last week, CEO Dirk Meyer back in January — is still unexplained and can lead to all kinds of speculation.

There’s not a lot of color on the rumor at this point. Is Dell considering making a more integrated kind of product line? Talk about a change in strategy.

However, in an update, things become a little more toned down:

My former colleague Ian King with Bloomberg this afternoon digs into this a bit, quoting analyst Patrick Wang with Wedbush Securities, who says “there is no management team there,” at AMD, and that “there is some ‘chatter’ that the company is up for sale,” but that in his view, “it’s a far-fetched possibility.”

Could Dell be interested in AMD? At around $6 billion, it would be one heck of a purchase and certainly give the company leverage against Intel, and give the OEM not only access to CPUs, but also GPUs, which means pressure on NVIDIA too.

It would sure liven things up. But for now I'm putting this one firmly in the 'rumor' pile.

  • I hope not

    Dell would screw it up.

I think I would have to agree with that. Dell has not been known to show much love for AMD over the years.

      • Have you seen the new lineup?

        @bobiroc

The new servers from Dell (Poweredge) carry AMD chips....

Yes and we have a few nice AMD Powered Dell PowerEdge servers used for Hyper-V servers and they run great.

I guess I mean they seem to offer less options and models with the AMD and it is more obvious in the desktop/laptop area than others. It seems like the purposely made it so all the AMD based likes are very cookie cutter with minimal to no customization. We purchase mainly from the Optiplex/Latitude line for our desktops and I loved the Optiplex 740 Models they used to have. Great price, great performance and good options. Those days are gone and now you have to take basically pre-configured options.

Also many times in the past Dell has viewed AMD is greatly inferior to Intel. It just seems to me that if they gave AMD the fair push that more people would see that AMD offers a great price to performance ratio. I have found myself countless times forced to an Intel based system to get some options that I needed like certain size/speed drives or extra NICs and controllers. Either that or I order the system without and add the options myself.

      • I don't even mean that

AMD is a very innovative company that comes out with great products. Dell is a cheap company that comes out with crap products for low prices. They don't innovate.

    • Doesn't Dell screw most everything up?

Even Alienware computers aren't built to the same standards they used to be built to.

@nix_hed No doubt, I looked into buying one until I started reading customer reviews.

  • It will happen...anoucement could be tonight?

I think AMD is def. up for sale and that basically management was laid off by the board so that they wouldn't require some major payout etc...

Furthermore, it's clear that AMD's new lineup of products, makes AMD really promising in the long run -- interesting that not one analyst has noted the significance of Accer using AMD Fusion chips in one of its new tablets...which would signal that Fusion chips can and will be in other Tablets - including perhaps Dell's... it would also make sense for any big computer maker to purchase AMD, as it would def. lower it's cost of making PC's Tablets etc. as a whole...

Dell + AMD = DAMeD. I'm an avid supporter of AMD and ATI, but I think I'd be hard pressed to keep using the processors if the companies merged...

      May I ask why?
Dell was the first to offer inexpensive computers...AMD is the least expensive of chips -- would make for a happy marriage IMO...

Simply because I have not had much luck with Dell towers as a whole, even with AMD chips in them, though more issues with Intel chips. Where as outside of Dell systems I've only had problems with Intel chips. Now granted my use of PCs to have problems is only in the 1000-2000 PCs range, but I feel that is enough to develop a preference. This is only with towers, when it comes to laptops I've only had a problem with one ever and that was due to a very weak fan. As for the range of towers, 300+ Dells, 800+ HPs, 200+ Lenovo/IBM systems, and of course a few custom made ones too.

      • Here's the thing

AMD is cheap while providing a good, rather innovative, experience.

Dell is cheap while making it obvious that they're cheap.

Wow sounds like Dell has burned you bad. Now I have taken apart many computers from virtually every brand out there and Dell is no different than the rest. My school district has had a very good experience with Dell over the last 10 years or so. There was one year we had a model that had a defective motherboard design causing the capacitors to bubble and leak and Dell took care of every one of them and we only had a few that failed years after the extended service was up. They all make the $399 specials and if that is what you want to pay then expect cheap crap. All OEMs that offer a low low end model line make them that way from what I see. Step up the next line up and it gets better.

Of course I only build my desktops for myself and my family because they are all cheap for what I can get in a high quality machine for less money and all it costs me is a couple hours of build time and OS/Software install time.

      • I once tried to upgrade my computer through Dell

I went through the process to make sure that the item would work with my computer, which involved the service number.

        I bought the part.

I then came to realize that for whatever reason, it wouldn't work. Around that time, I figured out that very few cards work.

I took that card, five years later, and put it in a newer computer. It works, but it barely works and it shows the "no video card" screen (with nice three color bars) when it starts up.

Then let's add the monitor that can't be moved... lest the power cord that keeps it alive shift wrong and it shuts off.

  • IF AMD is up for sale...

...then I would not be surprised if Dell is in the bidding. If Dell is interested, then one would figure that HP would also be interested.

Two other companies not mentioned that I would expect might be in the race would be Apple and IBM. IBM is already in the chip business, and adding AMD's technology would be a good fit. As for Apple, they certainly have the cash and could lock down another big piece of the hardware supply chain.

Well...somehow I have a feeling that tonight, at the conference call from Dell -- after the market closes -- they could announce that they are in talks with AMD...just a thought ....
      GypsyMan1
    • RE: AMD up for sale? Dell interested?

      @itpro_z

Oh please do not let it be Apple. I fear they would make it so AMD could not be used outside their brand and that would make me very unhappy.

I think HP/AMD is a better fit than Dell/AMD though.
      bobiroc
    • RE: AMD up for sale? Dell interested?

@itpro_z if apple bought them then I would never buy another AMD product again. Apple is a horrible and evil company, and shares none of the spirit that AMD has. IBM sold AMD a lot of their chip technology years ago and AMD applied it to x86. For them to buy AMD now would be like them buying back an evolved and mutated form of their own technology.

  • RE: AMD up for sale? Dell interested?

I don;t know if apple would buy AMD, they've only just started using Interl chips the last few years. As for Dell, I don't think I want them to buy AMD either, Dell comes across as cheap to me also. I would rather see IBM, one of the originals, buy AMD. If IBM bought them, I believe that AMd would still be able to be used outside of IBM systems. I don't see that option if Dell or Apple buy it.
