AMD's new dual-core Athlon processors

By | December 15, 2008, 12:07pm PST

Today AMD launched a pair of new Athlon processors as part of its “Cartwheel” home PC value platform. This is the first refresh of the Athlon series for some time.

amd_athlon_64_x2_processor_logo_svg.pngTwo parts were announced, one aimed at consumers and the other aimed at OEMs. The consumer part is the X2 7740 “Black” edition clock multiplier unlocked processor priced at $79. The OEM part is the X2 7550, a clock multiplier locked CPU.

Note: AMD believes that home consumers would prefer an overclock-friendly CPU with an unlocked clock multiplier, while OEMs prefer to play things conservatively and keep the clock multiplier locked.

Also worth noting is that no price was quoted for the OEM X2 7550.

The X2 7750 runs at 2.7GHz, while the X2 7550 runs at 2.5GHz. Both CPUs have 256KB of L1 cache and 512KB of L2 (giving a total of 1MB), and 2MB of shared L3 cache. Both parts are 65nm pieces and have a maximum TDP of 95W.

Overall performance of the X2 7750 seems to be better than Intel’s dual-core E5200, and given that the new AMD offering is cheaper than the E5200, this new AMD piece is ideal for the budget-conscious looking for the best bang for their bucks. Combine this processor with a 780G motherboard, a Radeon HD 4800 GPU and a few gigs of RAM and you have the basis for a very nice gaming platform.

Q3 2009?

I was hoping for Spring so I could use part of my Tax refund? Ah well good things come those that wait I suppose. In August 2009 my X2 will be 4 years old. I was going to upgrade my Mom's Athlon XP 2000+ with my X2 because that is what I usually do. I get a new machine and pass mine down to my parents.

AMD May surprise us all. THey have in the past and have the potential to do it again. The latest Core i7 processors from intel have hit a few bumps lately. From earlier reviews the overclock potential for these new AMD Processors seems pretty sweet. Acheivements of 4Ghz on Air Coooling and as high as 6Ghz (Stable) on Liquid cooling sound pretty impressive to me.

For now

For now, but I really hope they get it back. Competition is good for everybody.

AMD are still the better choice when it comes to affordable Mobo & Processor combo packages.

Everyone's cooing over the i7, but is that because they finally have an on-board memory controller?

Only the overclockers and Intel fanboys would diss AMD. They behave just like the fashion industry. Shallow with a strong sheep mentality, deriding anything that isn't the current fashion.

I am not sure about you but we have Intel and AMD based computers in our district bought last year and the Intels are Intel C2D at 2.4ghz and the AMDs are X2's at 2.6GHz. Other than the processor they are build basically the same when it comes to Ram, HDD, etc.. and the AMD has onboard Nvidia which blows away the Intel integrated graphics. They perform the same and there does not seem to be any noticeable performance differences. The thing is the AMD computers were hundreds cheaper per unit so when it comes down to it AMD offered the better price/performance ratio for my organization. The only reason we got a batch of Intels was because they were bought on a Grant and the teacher had a fit because he believed that Intel processors would be more compatible for his graphics lab. It was his money and I didn't feel like argueing.

On a personal side I have been using AMD since the K62 and they have always done well by me. Its almost time for me to upgrade and the PhenomII is looking pretty tasty...
I'm still running on the original single core Athlon64s, so they're due for retirement when PhenomII arrives.

I heard that AMD has pushed them back to Q3 2009.
