Analyst: RIM could halt production of PlayBook [UPDATED]

By | July 18, 2011, 11:51am PDT

RIM may be getting ready to pull the plug on the PlayBook’s life support machine, according to an analyst with RBC Capital Markets.

RBC Capital Markets Managing Director Mike Abramsky sent a note out to investors with the warning/prediction/guess about RIM’s tablet offering (*delete as applicable):

“Research In Motion is possibly planning to stop production of the BlackBerry PlayBook’s Wi-Fi model.”

One thing that’s not made clear is whether this would be a temporary halt of production to clear lines or a permanent one.

There have been rumors that the PlayBook tablet has been a flop going around for a while now. There have also been rumors that RIM has slashed internal sales targets of the PlayBook by a half. We also had an open letter claiming to be from an anonymous RIM employee outlining how the company could pull itself out of the tar-pit it’s found itself in.

RIM has also began a cycle of lay offs following lower than expected sales during the first quarter.

[UPDATE: RIM says that any rumor of the PlayBook being discontinued it 'pure fiction' and says there is 'no plan to discontinue' the tablet. RIM added that he PlayBook is launching in more countries 'as we speak.']

This is being pulled right after Apple won its patent fight against HTC. While the PlayBook isn't an Android based tablet, the writing is on the wall for all electronic device makers. Apple's patents are very broad and it is likely that companies are simply unwilling to fight Apple for the right to offer products that aren't selling well anyway.

@toddybottom
the Axis of evil software (Apple, M$ and Oracle) is bulling smaller competitors in courts.
RIM should adopt Android since Google guarantees its free of IP violations.
we are aware that many ip holders claim that we have included their unlicensed ip in this software and we make no claims whatsoever that this is not true and WILL NOT HELP YOU if you gets sued for using this.

Hey, when did Apple join the Axis of Evil? happy I thought they were the good guys. Oh wait, you can only be a good guy if you're not successful...my mistake.

@toddybottom Licence the tech or IP your products will be using or not and take a serious risk. Or like Apple who's iPhone v1 came out with what many claimed was a slew of missing features and sell well despite this and go to the folks who own the IP and say something to the effect of "We are selling well without your IP and will continue to do so or you can lower the cost of our license fee by X and we can do business it's up to you." Hense Apple has been seen adding "features" to the iOS as time passes... LEGALLY!

@toddybottom keep dreaming pal this was just another attack by apple cronies on the playbook. it shows how desperate apple is to stop this product from gaining ground. farewell ipad playbook and windows 8 will destroy your baby fart app store and your baby phone o.s.

@augustus_rome First you responded to the wrong guy. Second no Apple cronies were involved. Third and most important is that RIM had all the responsibility to have this product gain ground and "IF" it fails to do so only RIM is to blame.

@augustus_rome Wake -up Auggy competition is the best motivator you better hope that Rim does not pull the plug.

Alansonit Updated - 18th Jul
Please, please, please offer me a real alternative to an iPad. I don't want to join the fruity ones but I may just have to.
@Alansonit Why? Is this your envy? If this is your requirement, then there are many tablets out there that do as much as iPad does. Granted you wont have all the fun and that is where your envy would start

Windows 8 is an extension of Windows. Two different markets, although if Windows 8 isn't 'magical', Microsoft will continue to loose market share.

@Alansonit .. check out this other AKH write-up:

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/archos-g9-android-tablets-serious-competition-for-the-ipad/13442?tag=mantle_skin;content

The Archos G9 is a serious competitor device for the iPad that people (like you .. apparently) have been waiting for.

An analyst saying "possibly." That's a bit thin.

Adrian failing to include the quote from Abramsky, "...in addition to RIM focusing on upcoming cellularly-connected PlayBook versions" is a bit thick.

thx-1138_@... Updated - 19th Jul
@RealGem .. you (.. anyone) implying the opposite: that somehow the PlayBook is a roaring success; PlayBook will be the death of the iPad? ... or, let's go out and put our life savings into RIM?

If you've got a better information on the 'low down' and anything to suggest otherwise, by all means share it .. else you guys are about as credible as AKH on this one if all you offer up is petty lip service to RIM.

For mine, i'm gonna put a side bet on the article's author being pretty close to the truth.

So, go on ladies .. put your money where your mouth is.

:P
If theyd have been smart, ditched their own platform and marketplace, and switched their phones and tablets over to Windows last year theyd be on the path back to growth/profit. But they really needed to do this before Nokia did. Nokia got in first and got the sweet deal. RIM needs to try to find a way to get on board with this as well. It will now take a lot of work for them to compete with Nokia.

@Johnny Vegas and that would represent a counter argument that some have made. Look I don't mind that you are a fan of MS I am a fan of Apple so be it and to each their own. But lets be realistic shall we. Nobody is certain the Playbook is done... I for one hope not. No one knows that is going to happen to RIM.. I remember the days of the daily Apple is DOOMED predictions and look how that turned out:P Nobody knows how WP7 is going to do over time at least at this time. I wish it well I think a competitive market with many choices is always the best and that includes Android.

@Johnny Vegas rim is already highly profitable and sitting on a pile of cash only issue is they are going through a transition phase it is like a rebirth and some pain will be there but they are smart and they will come out shining. shifting to qnx was the smartest move they could have made.
They definitively should focus on the smartphones, businesses first.

MobileAdmin 18th Jul
Someone is definately pushing RIM lower, hmm tied to their own desire to buyback stock?

Halting production and discounting the product are two different things. One is due to excessive inventory the other is introduction of a new model / dropping continued support.

I feel they have an inventory surplus at the moment due to slow sales triggered by poor marketing of the PlayBook, lackluster reviews, lack of native email/PIM and Apps.

Well it has been public knowledge for a while now they're going to be out with a 4G model on, I think it was Sprint, but somewhere. So killing the Wi-Fi only one could be their option to sell the 4G one through Sprint at a subsidized price.

Then again, this is all speculation about a company who has announced plans to keep going with their Phone/Tablet model.

Well, to defend RIM...
voltrarian 18th Jul
I'm not a RIM user, but in its casual defense, I'd say one obvious brand strength is security and enterprise features.

Perhaps they do need to optimize their technology R&D/production queue, and if they weren't focusing on a good user experience, and listening to what users need, then that's just bad since the user should come first.

It would benefit the consumer, if more brands were able to compete in the market place and provide product diversity. That's main motivation behind this post -- to encourage a balance in the market to benefit the consumer, and understanding the need to keep technology moving forward -- rather than the crony capitalism and idiotic corruption of innovation known as the broad UI patent.

COULD halt? Oh, that narrows down possibility, doesn't it?
Apple COULD go out of business
NASA COULD go to the moon again
There COULD be a break thru for cancer.
Adrian COULD write a good column (at least we know he can do better....he's got the talent).
