Android goes from strength to strength - 700,000 devices activated every day

Andy Rubin, Google's senior vice president of mobile, says that a staggering 700,000 Android devices are being activated each day.

Let's put that figure into perspective. It works out at almost 5 million devices per week, or a staggering 21 million a month. During the fourth quarter of 2011 Apple sold Apple sold 17 million iPhones and 11 million iPads over the three month period. If Google can keep up these sort of activation numbers, there will be over 60 million Android devices activated per quarter.

Earlier this month I predicted that I wouldn't be surprised if Google ended up activating 1 million Android devices daily by this time next year. That was based on Google now activating some 550,000 new devices a day. This official bump up to 700,000 per day makes the million figure much easier to achieve during 2012.

      @Davewrite Most likely because Google doesn't make mp3 players. Which despite running iOS and all the fancy apps, is still its base function.

        @Aerowind <br><br>so? what is your point? to OS activation numbers.<br><br>if you want to parse it then you can parse it down to 'what is a smart phone' too because a lot of android phones (like millions in asia) can't run Android apps or Google services - they are just flip phone replacements. i.e except for the phone function they are WAY simpler than an iPod touch. <br><br>even in the U.S if you count the carriers 'smart phone' activations in their quarterly reports you find there's a discrepancy with analyst numbers because the carriers don't count ALL android phones they carry as smartphones (some they consider in their filings as basic feature phones ) but analysts count ALL androids regardless of functionality as 'smartphones'.<br><br>(all I've said is easily proven from the simple fact that iPhone makes 50-66% of all cell phone profits - rest divided by androids, nokias, blackberries, win phones etc. If ALL androids were smart phones like iPhone - and top of the line androids like Nexus actually cost MORE, 299 vs 199 - there's no way apple would suck all the profits. obviously huge number of androids are just cheap basic phones)

        @Peter Perry <br><br>KIndle Fires?<br>sure why not and apple's PROFIT SHARE will even be bigger because I suspect they'll make a loss (app proftis won't offset unit cost losses). <br><br>by the way were the reports from various PC manufacturers like Dell saying they've given up on netbooks (which Steve Jobs laughed at) or were there so happy they were raking it in and ramping up production? did HP almost decide to give up on PCs? .. hmm...can't remember.. do remember though that plenty of pundits said the 'millions and millions' of netbooks will kill Apple..

        @Davewrite not likely but stick to that fantasy all you want! It makes sense to have a prime account and many do! Kindle will deliver on music, books and prime sales!<br><br>And those millions of net books were there before Apple so it never took it on head first! This is taking Apple on head on and whipping its arse!

Each dude is going to get a bonus equal to amazons entire quarter profit! (Kindle fire hmm?) <br><br>the top 200 app store apps make 4 times more money that all the android apps (hundreds of thousands) in google market put together. (so is markeshare hurting ios developers?) <br><br>looks like apple is the one whooping ass..<br>shoot ... not only whooping but kicking that azz across the floor forwards and sideways at will.. <br><br>as for marketshare numbers if apple wanted to give phones away and make no money ... lol

        (PS. I own both google and apple stock. Since android my google stock is flat, my apple stock has tripled) <br>

        @Davewrite Do you really believe these netbooks took the iPad on head on? No, they didn't and we were talking about iOS! Sorry, like your choice of products I will try to dumb things down for you in the future!

        You were also the one that claimed Android was losing money! Guess what, it isn't and your claims about the top 200 apps is unfounded! Google is moving in the right direction here and clearly Apples numbers show they heading for the position of first loser!

        dude.. android probably makes one billion in REVENUE for google, to get PROFITS (i.e money in the bank) you have to minus R&D , support, the huge staff hired for Android... and the pending 12.5 billion for motorola not to mention lawyer fees to fight oracle, microsoft etc.

        so you decide whether they are making money or a loss?
        lol.

        apple whomped netbooks by building something way better and sucking all the profits

        so as I was asking is it warm there?

        The Kindle Fire isn't being marketed as an Android device, and I'm not going to count it as one. I don't care how many they sell, I'm only counting real Android devices.

      @jdakula Errrrr ahhhh, let's change the subject. Android is open and Apple is closed. Plus all of the apps that Apple makes you pay for is free on Android. It's all Apple's fault!!!

        @hammeroftruth It's funny isn't it, how back before Apple started becoming successful it was all about it being better rather than being bigger (Microsoft). Then when it hit gold in the consumer space the advocates were all about market share. Now that Android is surpassing it in market share the usual suspects will post in every article about revenue per unit or somesuch.

        @jgm@... Sorry to disappoint you but I have not changed my tune at all in regard to market share or revenue. Does not matter at all what your market share is if you can't make a profit or keep your doors open. Apple could gobble up market share like crazy if that was their ultimate goal simply but cutting to razor thin margins but obviously that is not the goal is it.

    • Yes, google makes money but Apple makes about 50 Times more

      @jdakula <br><br>google says it' makes 2.5 billion a year off mobile (two thirds of their search revenue though comes from iOS, the rest is divided on android, nokia , rim etc phones) so probably they make a billion or less a year from Android.<br><br>Apple makes 10 billion plus a quarter from iPhone alone before iAds, App Store, iPads etc so probably make easily 50 billion plus a year off mobile.<br><br>Google also PAYs apple to have google search on iOS (which as i said is two thirds of google's mobile searches).
