Angry Birds are about to become billionaires

By | August 12, 2011, 3:02am PDT

Summary: Some big names want in on the Angry Birds action.

No wonder those Angry Birds have to work hard at keeping those pesky pigs at bay - Rovio Entertainment, the company behind the game is about to get a round of funding that would push the value of the company to over $1 billion.

$1.2 billion in fact.

The names touted as being behind this investment are interesting - game developers Electronic Arts and Zynga, along with News Corp and Walt Disney. None of the parties have confirmed any deal yet.

Angry Birds has extended well beyond the gaming world, with plush toys, clothing, iPhone cases and even flip flops. There’s also plans for an Angry Birds movie.

Angry Birds is an example of how a seemingly small game can come along and make a huge impact.

With over a billion dollars behind the birds, I don’t think those pigs stand a chance.

Haven't you heard? Angry Birds is going public in the next year .. Angry Birds on the Public Stock Exchange
A good and simple idea can make 1billion very fast these days... o.o
for startups that aren't profitable yet. Is Angry Birds not profitable? Viable businesses get loans or go public when they want cash to expand.

No way would I ever invest in Rovio. Think about it, they are a one hit wonder. All they have is Angry Birds. Once that gets outdated they are up the creek.
@LoverockDavidson Just wait for the sequel!!

Happy Birds
Emotional Birds
Bipolar Birds
Screaming Birds
Crying Birds
Alfred Hitchcocks' Angry Birds
Jet Engine Birds
Sleeping Birds

@hjenkins1

you forgot Flipping Birds. Already banned in Germany.
out just before the fad fades.
@baggins_z You probably said the same thing about Electronic Arts and others. Glad you have a crystal ball.

Angst over what is on someone else's plate is a fatal flaw. If you want a billion, make it happen....
@LoverockDavidson - Then they have been paddling for the past three months. When my eleven year old and his friends uninstalls a game (which he did three months ago) , that's a pretty good barometer for interest level.
@LoverockDavidson Just like the Crazy Frog ringtone!
@LoverockDavidson Even after a very quick look at Rovio's website, you'll se they're responsible for about 30 games not related to Angry Birds. Not having played any of them, I can't say if they're not related to conic sections though.
How can you be angy about that amount of money? Love Angry Birds, and I am glad to see that Rovio is thriving.
That is some BS. The game is more overrated then Fred from YouTube. I don't care what anyone says I stand by my opinion. Its unoriginal and gets old really fast. I've played other online games just like it but different locations and different things to knock over. If the creators get billion dollars off this game then I should get a billion dollars just for copying someone else's idea.
As MAD Magazine said in 1962 "The Birds is Coming ... and Good Grammar in Advertising is Went"
I guess I got bored too fast with this "Pong with faces" app to notice where the income stream would be. And how does this make money for someone? Was there advertising that I just didn't notice?
@day@... Where were you when they started selling merch? I've got a cute little plushie angry bird on my desk right now. Face it, those characters have become iconic to a vast population and it will only continue to spawn new ventures (assuming, of course, Rovio doesn't fail to innovate). They've got a movie deal lined up? Fantastic. Perhaps they can be the next Hello Kitty, plastering their lovable characters all over every product category imaginable.
@PacoBell
Duh-Oh! Of course! Saw the birds selling at Kings Dominion for big bucks. I just realized why I'm a pauper.
Signs that Dot.comImplosion 2.0 can't be far away now
