Apple announces Worldwide Developers Conference 2011, iPhone 5 seems unlikely

By | March 28, 2011, 6:39am PDT

Apple has announced the dates for Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2011 - Monday, June 6 through Friday, June 10.

Why no iPhone 5? Well, partly it’s down to the rumors I’m hearing (all building up to give the picture that there’s no iPhone 4GS/5 coming this summer), but in the press release announcing WWDC 2011 Apple seems to be actively shifting the focus away from iPhone and back onto the software:

“At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.”

So, Mac OS X ‘Lion’ is going to be a yes, iOS 5 preview is also a yes, but I’m not holding out any hopes for new iPhone hardware announcements at WWDC this year.

@Jackson Hole Jake New phone in summer or fall? Who cares?
Regardless if you or anybody else on here cares, the tens of millions that will by the next version care. Sorry to burst your bubble but your opinion while valid doesn't apply to everyone.

Apple says yes. Zdnet says no.
CathyCC 28th Mar 2011
Let me get this straight: Apple themselves SPECIFICALLY says they will unveil IOS5 in June.

And Apple has *ALWAYS* made a new iphone every June/July. Always.

But "zdnet" knows more than Apple now?
@CathyCC
There will be an iPhone 5 in July and it will have the new dual core processor!! can't wait!

I believe that the iPhone 5 will be ready for release at WWDC, using iOS 4.x until iOS 5 is released. Apple will preview iOS 5 at WWDC and will probably release Lion at that time.

While last year's WWDC had a heavy iOS focus I think Lion will receive an equal share of the attention.

Key feature of the combined iOS & OS X presentation? For me it will be how tightly Apple brings the two together.

No iPhone 5? iOS5 Yes?
CaptKarma 28th Mar 2011
I see that the Apple iPhone 3GS price has just been dropped from $100 to $49? Seems to me that a new iPhone is on its way. iOS5 and Lion for sure, loaded on a new iPhone, only Apple knows. Did anyone see this?

Nothing all that new

@CaptKarma
The $49 3GS has been available through ATT for months. The first time I noticed it was January when I was shopping to replace my 3G which I had busted. This doesn't really change things all that much.
@macadam
Apple offered it the moment the iPhone 4 was available for Verizon. Simple as that.
There won't be a phone because they're getting whooped in the sales dept. by Motorola and HTC.. Probably push it to xmas

@chrismoutcrop

Is getting whooped?
@Bruizer Says who? If they are making the highest profit per device, that would only mean that they are making them CHEAPER than other brands. Meaning its lower quality overall so that they could pocket more money from each sale.
@Jimster480 Cheaper BOM cost does not mean lower quality no matter how much you would like everyone to believe it. It's call economies of scale. I don't have hard figures but I would suspect that combining the top selling model from both Moto and HTC wouldn't equal the sales of the iPhone 4. Sure, they probably each sell more devices across their lines than Apple but they don't get to enjoy the same volume pricing Apple does with one device.
It would make sense to push it to a September release date since the Verizon iPhone 4 just came out and the white 4 is also new. I think Apple wants to get the Verizon and AT&T phones on the same release cycle. If one carrier always got the new phone 6 months before the other carrier, why wouldn't you switch?

Come one people, this is Apple. Everyone expects the iPhone 5 to be announced in June, but Apple doesn't follow the lead of anyone but themselves. That's what will make this software only announcement so innovative and revolutionary, no one expected that.
Normally a major iOS release is accompanied by a new model of handset, and vice versa. "One more thing..." may be the humorous order of the day!
Apple has *ALWAYS* made a new iphone every June/July

Really? Lets see, there was the iPhone 2G, iPhone3G, iPhone3GS and iPhone 4, that's only 4, a trend yes, but Always?

Apple needs (my opinion) to throw some seawater on this reactor before it melts down. How long can even Apple keep up the pace of a major release once a year. At some point they are going to outpace the ability of the hardware.
@pllamonica@... It doesnt matter becaues without a 4G version of the iPhone its gonna be DOA. Everyone is raging about 4G these days, with dual core CPU's, higher res screens, HDMI out, expandable storage, full codec support, interchangable batteries, and higher res cameras. So unless the iPhone 5 comes with all of those things, its going to become a niche product just like Mac's were in the 90s to early 2000's.
@Jimster480 You must be one of those guys who was predicting the death of Apple all through the 90's.
@loidab
Apple should be very thankful to Intel, Microsoft, and Napster for their current run.
@Jimster480 Thanks, it's good to have something to laugh at first thing in the morning.
LOL what a joke why would it be sold out? iphone is a junk phone it so many bugs like DeathGrip, Alarm clock issues and now daylight savings time and also not having year 2011 be changed while phone is on hahaha have to reboot your junk iphone to get right year hahahah

Thanks to my windows phone 7 it is fast, way better user interface and glad no more ugly apps icons which make it so bloated and also takes so long to find stupid app. Windows phone 7 so awesome. Ck out this video I found youtube.com/thewebmogul why windows phone are still best to use for personal and business use and more realiable. Good luck on your iphone and having the deathgrip to get a signal. Sooner or later you will say "Can you hear me now!" LOL...
@ipadsucks
Dang... 2 paragraphs liberally sprinkled with LOLs & hahaha's convincing yourself that the phone your Mommy bought you is better. I'm a windows users and even I thought that was overboard, and clearly overcompensating for something.
What if Apple announced a conference and nobody cared? Android phones have so much more such as turn by turn voice GPS and a predictive dialer - neither of which are in the iPhone - that Apple's phones are truly yesterday's news. And, they'll stay that way.

New phone in summer or fall? Who cares?
@Jackson Hole Jake
Predictive dialer is a fantastic function, WinMo 6.x had it too.
@Jackson Hole Jake
I'm all with you there; however imaps or whatever it is called will be part of the show this year I am willing to bet. do some web searching, it has been mentioned around a few times. My guess is that apple is going to try and one up google maps... maybe by integrating all iOS devices into their mapping software somehow. Or perhaps they will incorporate a real gps mapping system like TomTom and all of their features. no real idea, but I can guess about a a good dozen or some updates that google maps is missing.
