Apple iPod lineup revamp

Summary: So, what went down today at Apple’s “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it” event?

So, what went down today at Apple’s “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it” event?

Well, first off a gaunt Steve Jobs took to the stage and described himself as “vertical, back at Apple and enjoying every day of it.”

According to Jobs the video camera market has “really exploded and we want in,” and Apple’s answer to this is to integrate one into the iPod nano. The new camera won’t increase the size of the nano. Along with the new camera, the nano will get a 2.2″ screen, a voice recorder, a pedometer, an FM radio, a speaker and a microphone.

There was also some iPod touch news. The highlights are that an 8GB touch will now set you back $199. The device also received an internal upgrade, boosting performance by 50%.

Other highlights:

  • iTunes 9 featuring Genius technology for the App Store to recommend apps based on what you’ve already downloaded. Also featuring iTunes LP rich content download (such as lyrics), better app management and home sharing.
  • 160GB iPod classic for $249.
  • Polished stainless steel iPod shuffle for $99.

I’m just wondering how revolutionary a camera in the nano will be. Cameras are pretty ubiquitous nowadays and maybe Apple is a few years late here. Also, the differences between the iPhone and iPod touch are starting to feel arbitrary, like the differences between Windows editions!

Sorry Adrian but you failed to realize that Apple just invented the video camera. Those other things that you saw before weren't easy to use so they don't count.

No, no no!

You're wrong, NZ. Apple didn't make it easy to use; they actually INVENTED IT. It's never been done before. Ever.

At least in Apple's world... just like cut and paste.

just wondering what the apple fanbase is going to say about those extra features on their simple and elegant devices. How many times has the FM radio been looked down on when included on other devices? And now there's a video camera??????

Performance Increase On 8GB?
Whyaylooh 9th Sep 2009
From the way I'm reading things, it's looking like the 8GB is not getting the performance boost. If you look on the Touch page on the Apple Store, the speed increase is mentioned on the 32GB and 64GB models, but not the 8GB. Also, from Sam Diaz's live blog, they mentioned, "Other enhancements for the bigger devices is that they?re faster with improved graphics." (Key phrase: the bigger devices.)

It may just be an oversight on the Apple Store listing, but it sure sounds to me like the only improvement on the 8GB is the OS update, which you can get by grabbing one of the $149 refurbs loaded with OS 3.0 and taking advantage of the free upgrade. Otherwise, to get all the new benefits, you have to go for the $299 32GB or $399 64GB.

The Zune HD with its excellent OLED screen and great design look seems to have overtaken the iPod touch.

If it plays music and you enjoy it, who really cares what others think of your choice as to brand??!!
