Apple posts Final Cut Pro X Q&A, new features coming

I know that a lot of you are interested in or already running Final Cut Pro X, and that a subset of you have been having some problems and experiencing issues with this latest release so I thought it would be useful to post this here.

Here’s what’s covered:

  • Can I import projects from Final Cut Pro 7 into Final Cut Pro X?
  • Can I import my video directly into Final Cut Pro X as I could in Final Cut Pro 7?
  • Can I edit my tape-based workflow with Final Cut Pro X?
  • Does Final Cut Pro X support multicam editing?
  • Does Final Cut Pro X support external monitors?
  • Can I save different versions of my project?
  • Are keyboard shortcuts in Final Cut Pro X different from those in Final Cut Pro 7?
  • Can I use my third-party plug-ins in Final Cut Pro X?
  • Can I specify a scratch disk location?
  • Can I share projects with other editors?
  • Can I store media in locations other than my system drive?
  • Can I hide Events that I am not working on?
  • Can Final Cut Pro X export XML?
  • Does Final Cut Pro X support OMF, AAF, and EDLs?
  • Can I send my project to a sound editing application such as Pro Tools?
  • Does Final Cut Pro X allow you to assign audio tracks for export?

The answer to some of these questions is a resounding ‘Not yet’ which indicates that there are updates in the pipeline. One feature that’s never going to appear is the ability to import from previous incarnations of Final Cut Pro - this will undoubtedly upset some users.

[UPDATE: A reader sent me a link to a petition by 'editors and affected filmmakers who rely on Final Cut Pro as a crucial business tool' who are upset by the the changes Apple have made to Final Cut Pro:

A large corporation such as Apple, Inc. should not make "revolutionary" paradigm-shifting changes to software which can be referred to as "industry-standard". This is unfair to workers who rely on Final Cut Pro as a business tool and will devastate the Final Cut Pro community. Many editors have relied on the software since its first release and supported Apple through both the hard and easy times. Apple Inc. now has over $75 billion in assets and does not need to risk the livelihoods of its professional customers by silently discontinuing "Final Cut Pro" instead of selling it to a company willing to support working film, tv, and advertising industry professionals.

The petition calls on Apple to:

1. Final Cut Studio 3 is immediately reinstated, supported, and referred to as Apple's "professional grade" editing application.
2. Final Cut Pro is restored under a new name with the functionality and user interface of Final Cut Pro 7.
3. Final Cut Pro X is to be considered part of the iMovie family or labeled a "prosumer" product.

OR,

1. The source code to Final Cut Pro 7 is auctioned or sold to a third-party by January 1, 2012.

Jobs was answering to a letter representing a very tiny amount of buyers who suffer from antenna shorting because their hands are sweaty or conduct more electricity than typically (this is individual) -- and he answered, among other measures, to "hold it differently".

When Apple offered it "bumper" cases for free, it turned out that almost no one wanted them (and, by the way, there are many people like David Pogue who could not make the antenna effect happen no matter what they tried). Just another proof how media blows its bubbles.

@Will Pharaoh: As to 640K, actions speak lauder than words: it was Gates' decision to put this limit. So even if he never said exact phrase, he made worse than saying it -- he messed up the system for many years to come.

Did Final Cut Pro 7 suddenly stop working upon the release of Final Cut Pro X? Sure, software ages, but only as a function of improved software. If one has the 'ultimate' version it shouldn't age then should it? Perhaps Apple doesn't see any benefit to continuing to be a cheap 'standard' for the film editing business. If my research is remotely accurate Apple makes as much selling just Macs in one quarter as the entire movie industry does in a year. Maybe Kodak should re-introduce Super 8 film and cameras.

It doesn't matter if Final Cut Pro X sucks and a handful of customers are out $300+ considering Apple makes very little profit from this product.

IIRC, Final cut pro 7 is not longer available in any of it's versions. This directly impacts a professional studio's ability to add any more editors.

So yes, in a way FCP7 did suddenly stop working.

This is just inane. FCP X will work just fine in tandem with FCP 7. We are doing this right now. So, anyone can roll it out slowly to insure that the new version will "fit" in whatever environment you chose. It is not iMovie. It is a new product. Everyone just grow a pair and learn something new and wonderful. Stop complaining and start educating. The petition idea is lame, lame, lame.

This really isn't a joke for professional users. The new interface is terrible, and experience tells us that the further along Apple goes with development, the less reliable Final Cut 7 will be.

Apple needs to fix this ASAP, not offer FAQs... or they will see thousands of post-houses and professional users switch over to Adobe Premiere or back to AVID.

This is a massive error of ego on Apple's part.

Final Cut Pro X's Final Price

Real quick point. Has anyone thought about the fact that once Apple finishes delegating all the missing features to third-party developers, we will all be paying more in the end for less. For example, just to add the the ability to export OMF, AAF and EDL, we would have to buy the add-on from Automatic Duck ($450.00). that's $450.00 on top of the $300 spent for FCP X. That comes out to roughly $750.00. Now add Compressor ($50.00) and Motion 5 ($50.00). Now we are at roughly $850.00.

Once all the other third-party developers add on the other missing, much needed elements, I am willing to bet that we will end up paying much more then the $999.00 price of FCP Studio and still will be minus such things as a full blown color correction capabilities, etc..

It's like buying a Ferrari from the junk yard. It will be really nice one day, but first, you've got to peace meal it together yourself.

I think it was brilliant marketing on Apple's part; get more people to buy a stripped down version for less by marketing it as the successor of the currently well respected version. More people buy FCP X there-by increasing their profit margin as a result of moving a higher number of units. Then once those that are professionals figure out that it does not have what it takes to get the job done in a professional environment, it's too late, they've already bought it. Apple's response is then promises upgrades soon and to lay the rest of the work at the feet of third -party developers. Brilliant I Say!!!!! (being sarcastic).

It's a disaster. Professionals will have to move to cheaper more powerful machines running a modern OS (Win 7) and get to choose from a variety of video editors and production suites that have more features than FCP.

The myth of the Mac being better for video is exactly that - a myth and those "professionals" who chose to believe Apple are now being treated like annoying hobbyists.

We do a lot of video production and I'll take a Windows video application over FCP any time.

All I have to say is I have stuck with Adobe Premiere and it has gotten beter and better over time while Apple with Final Cut tries to nickel and dime you.. It will only get worse now that Jobs is leaving Apple..

If all of you people are so angry about all of this, why dont you all pressure Apple by not buying their software? Its not like there arent alternatives to final cut. Apple clearly thinks their new approach to video editing is more effective. If you dont agree, signing a petition and acting indignant is going to accomplish exactly nothing.
