  • iPod touch sales grew 27% year-on-year.

  • International sales hover around the two-thirds mark as expected and normal lately.
  • Healthy boost in Mac sales … folks were unwrapping a lot of Macs over the Holidays.
  • Record iPhone quarter, comfortably beating the previous high last quarter which hovered just above the 14 million mark.
  • Weak iPod sales, reinforcing the believe that everybody who wants one already has three.
  • iPad sales on the up from previous quarter …
  • Total of 160 million iOS devices sold by the end of the quarter.
  • Apple is now sitting on a $59.7 billion cash pile

We had a phenomenal holiday quarter with record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We are firing on all cylinders and we’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon which customers can’t wait to get their hands on.”

“We couldn’t be happier with the performance of our business, generating $9.8 billion in cash flow from operations during the December quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $22 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $4.90.”

@John Zern : 33 million iOS devises were sold in calendar Q4 -- about 358 000 activations per day (16.2 million iPhones, 7.33 million iPads, 10 million iPod touches).

Google reported reaching 300 000 activations per day before the end of the year, so iOS is still sells better.

However, smartphone sales are bigger for Android, since there are countless of cheapo half-baked, no market-store "smart" phones on this OS.

Apple could only do 16.2 million of iPhones: production still lacks.

By the way: AKH's "iPad cumulative" graph is wrong: it is 15 million (he forgot Q2 of last year).

@John Zern

almost owed an apology by Diaz and all the frothing at the mouth idiot apple fanbois.

"OH, the horror" how dare Loverock bring up stock prices when news of Jobs' medical leave comes about.

who on earth would be worried about something superficial and meaningless as a stock price in a time like this???

Oh, wait...Apple. They knew their stock was gonna take a hit when Jobs took some time off, so yeah, announce right before great earnings call.

Hey Loverock, because I know you'll never hear it from the idiot faithful...on their behalf, they apologize. And, can they get some pepper for all the egg on their faces?
@SonofaSailor
Thanks SonofaSailor happy But your not the one that has to apologize. Actually no apology from anyone would be needed. I was just curious if we were going to get a repeat of 2 years ago, turns out we did.

Gotta hand it to Apple. Amazing holiday season, even with the potential for serious upgrades early this year.
@webmaster@... Troll response:
1. Sales are entirely due to deceptive marketing and a rabid base of fan boys.
2. Apple steals money from orphans
3. When Jobs leaves Apple will vanish in a puff of 'magic' smoke
4. Apple doesn't make any products that are worth anything.

Sorry, I couldn't keep a straight face anymore.
Kudos to the Apple team! Great products! The best customer service in any industry! Great values!

@Hasam1991 To look at these numbers and consider the fact that they are pre-Verizon iPhone, that's an amazing thought. What will 2011 look like for Apple? There's every indication that its going to be HUGE!

Great news for Apple
Ken_z 18th Jan 2011
But I would sure hate to be a CEO of a PC company, or Steve B at MS. There are going to be a lot of shareholders (and probably Directors) asking why Apple can do so well and they can't.
@Ken_z Why would you ask that? And who in their right mind would ever call The Great and Powerful Steve Ballmer on his company?s poor performance?

Poor performance?
Peter Perry 18th Jan 2011
@Rick_K Seriously? Windows 7 erased all of Apples gain in market share in 1 year and iWork still does not compete with Office let alone that Apple has no real gaming division.

Remember, Microsoft's last earnings were very close to Apples and they probably sold quite a few products this Christmas as well.

My question though, how come neither Apple nor MS can match Google.
@Peter Perry

Match Google? How? Why? Apple and Microsoft have the highest revenues and profits in the tech industry. Google wishes they made the money those two companies do.
@Peter Perry.. MS too.. the only way they could equal Google is if they each threw about $15 billion (and growing) of profit in the fireplace every year..

do you have any idea what you are talking about? lol.. clueless!

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Steve B makes far, far, far, far, far more money than you do and has, in the last 11 years as the head of MS, made more money than you will make in a life time.

So no, I don't feel the least bit sorry for Steve B.

Could it be the difference in businesses
Mister Spock 18th Jan 2011
@Ken_z?
When last I checked, Apple is a hardware company, while Microsoft is a software company.

They do overlap in certain areas, yet Apple's record profits where not primarily due to sales of it's software, nor its PC line.

One could post the question why can Exxon make the profits they do, and Apple cannot?

Where are you with your typical Apple is getting screwed posts.

Where have I ever even hinted that Apple is "getting screwed"? Have you lost your mind? Seriously?

I'm WELL on the record as saying that Apple is a tremendously successful company thanks to their ability to steal ideas from others (Jobs has admitted this) and then out-marketing the competition.

Nothing about this announcement contradicts a single thing I've ever written about Apple.

So sorry browser, I know you had pinned your hopes on proving me wrong but next time, try to prove me wrong about something I've written instead of something you've made up. happy happy happy

Talk about having to pay the Microsoft Tax for the privilege to use Windows on cr@ppy hardware.

Why is paying for Windows a tax? Defend your statement.

And my MBP is not cr@ppy hardware. The combination of MBP and Windows 7 is better than anything either Apple or MS have ever put out on their own. Non zealots like me get the best of both worlds. happy

I pay for the operating system as it is a componet of the computer.

Do not Apple users pay for the software in their devices, as it is a component of the unit purchased?

NonZealot Updated - 18th Jan 2011
Given a profit margin of 38% points to an overpriced product, what does an 80% margin point to?

Apple zealots have convinced me, over time, that there is no such thing as "overpriced". A company MUST charge what the market will bear.

I still don't know what Apple's profit margin has to do with a Microsoft Tax or the fact that you believe an MBP is cr@ppy hardware though.

And Apple tax? I don't think we do hear about Apple tax. The Microsoft tax is usually the complaint of complete and utter idiots who are too stupid and moronic to figure out how to buy a computer that doesn't have Windows on it. They (incorrectly) call it a tax because they are too dim witted to figure out how to "avoid" it and so their tiny, stupid minds figure that it can't be avoided. They whine and moan and complain about how they can't buy a specific model of Dell without Windows on it while at the same time proudly proclaiming how much they love their Mac that came without... wait for it... Windows on it. But those are stupid people and you aren't a stupid person.

So instead of bringing up completely irrelevant MS related idiotic arguments, why not just use the perfectly valid argument that nothing is truly overpriced since consumers always have the option of simply not purchasing that product, be it an iPhone or a Windows OS.
@rarsa absolutely confirm that THEY have their product priced perfectly..

also remember... Apple buys more, flash memory, more small screens, more of about any component you can think of for these mobile devices than anyone in the industry and gets better pricing on these components than anyone in the industry as well... and this contributes to them having great margins.. HTC, Samsung, Moto etc all sell android products, but they are individual companies.. they do not buy and get the volume pricing on those components that apple does.. people like to group all android manufactures together, but Apple (a single company) sells a much phones as all the android manufactures HTC, Samsung, Moto etc, etc all together.. this is why you see these guys unable to price there tablets under an iPad except with Carrier discounts..

that's the biggest problem with the android model.. you pay for that diversity.. you have a whole slew of companies each buying components separately, getting crappy volume pricing deal.. all competing directly with each other and trying to squeak out a profit..
@browser. WinZealot is usually saying that ?Apple is screwing the consumer?. The products are sub-par, and over-priced. That Apple can?t possibly ever be more profitable that the Great Savior Microsoft.

That Apple cant possibly ever be more profitable that the Great Savior Microsoft.

Liar.
@Rick_K You can do this when Slave Labor makes 90% of your product and delivers things at rock bottom prices.

Now of course when China calls in their debt then we have the issue of those costs rising or moving manufacturing back to the USA to be competitive.

any comments on the numbers?

Congratulations to Apple for being incredibly successful. They deserve all the success they have with the iPhone 4 and the MacBook Pro. These are the only 2 good products Apple has ever released. Neither is revolutionary or magical, both are simply evolutionary steps from what everyone else has been putting out for years, not that this is a bad thing.

Mac sales driven by MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
...
16.24 million iPhones in the quarter, a 86% unit growth over the year-ago quarter.

16 million iPhones in 1 quarter. That's truly fantastic. And like I said, Apple deserves its iPhone 4 success. They had 4 tries to get it right and they finally did.

And also a big congrats to Apple for the success of the iPad. The pet rock was also successful so this just proves that a bad product with a good marketing strategy is better for the shareholders than a good product with a bad marketing strategy (MS, I'm looking at you).

Well banned... was that the response you were hoping for? happy

oh, wait. that was before and you don't remember what you said yesterday, do you?

and only someone totally delusional would think that a company probably making around 100 BILLION in sales this fiscal year is selling these millions of devices every month because of their good marketing...

the last ridiculous meme of the clueless apple haters: but, but apple devices ain't anything special! they are all the same as all the crap you bought so far, they only sell so well, because of that magical marketing!

sorry, i know that basic concept will destroy anything you believe in, but people only buy apple products because they like them, not because someone told them to.

. about your remarks how microsoft is so much more profitable. and always will be.

Yes, I've brought up the fact that MS was (is?) more profitable than Apple when Apple zealots like you have stated that profits are the only thing that count. When you made the comments about how profits are the only thing that counted, MS was, at the time, more profitable. Nothing about todays announcement will ever go back in time and change that fact.

As for the and always will be, I'll ask you to provide links for that one. I don't believe I've ever said that MS will always be more profitable than Apple. That would be a silly thing to write.

but, but apple devices ain't anything special

iPhone 4 and MBP are good devices. They aren't revolutionary in any sense of the word but they are good devices. All other Apple products are terrible though.

Oh I forgot, this is Apple, they aren't afraid to give the real numbers.
@Ron Burgundy
they made the statement that "iPods, iPhones, and Apple TV sold a combined total of X".

It is a nice why to hide underselling products, while still legally reporting the profit made on the device.
@Ron Burgundy Plus, Apple actually changed their reporting practices about a year ago and now every device shipped to a retail outlet counts as sold... This clearly isn't 100% accurate and you might never know the real numbers sold.

What we so know for sure is that Android Devices are being activated at a rate of 300,000 per day as of December and those are actually in consumers hands.
@Cyberidiot!

Shut up already. you saying the same tired crap under a different avatar doesn't make it any more interesting.

(hint: you posts were stupid when they were posted under Cyberidiot...repeating them under Ron Slurpundy just makes you look stupid)

You can always tell if someone on the Internet is tough in real life because they threaten you with physical violence in their posts. If someone were weak in real life, they wouldn't DARE threaten someone else... anonymously... over the Internet... from behind their keyboard...

So I would suggest you leave Ron alone from now on. You wouldn't want to end up in the ICU and Ron wouldn't threaten you with that if he couldn't do it. That would be dishonest.

wrong
banned from zdnet 19th Jan 2011
@ the haters
wrong. apple always reported ipod and iphone units separately (and never reported apple tv numbers in their quarterly reports).

and no, they didn't change their "reporting practice" one year ago. that wouldn't be legally possible. as most companies they count sales where they occur, when their sales partners BUY them from apple. true, that doesn't mean sold to a customer but that's what the inventory numbers are for that apple (as one of the few companies) also reports every quarter. so every company watcher has a clear picture of apple's sell through rate to end customers. inventory is about 2-4 weeks for ipods and iphones. a record for the industry.

the difference to the wp7 numbers is, that while it is true that those handsets and licenses are technically sold, analysts want to know how customers have reacted to the product (sell through numbers). and because microsoft refuses to give an update to that initial shipping number everyone is rightfully skeptical.
