Starting this June, component maker ASUS will begin shipping one of its Mini ATX motherboards in a cardboard box that will double as a PC case.

ITWorld has a photo and a video of the box in question:

The idea is that enthusiasts can use the cardboard box as a PC case while shopping around for the ideal case for their build. It's also billed as a method to cut down on shipping waste.

I'm not so convinced. The whole thing seems gimmicky to me. First, if this is to save on whopping waste, then why does the box seem bigger than any motherboard box I've seen? This thing is huge, like a storage box (it has to be to be able to accommodate the bits that go into a PC). Also, ASUS itself only gives the box a lifetime of about one year before the box has to be dumped.

Then there's the whole issue of RF (radio frequency) shielding. PCs are pretty electrically noisy as a plain cardboard box isn't going to offer much in the way of shielding.

Then there's the small issue that cardboard has the capacity to burn pretty enthusiastically, and while PCs don't regularly catch fire, sparks, flames and fires are a possibility. Enclosed in a metal case, these fires are usually pretty subdued, but a cardboard box (especially untreated, but even treated cardboard exposed to oils and grease will ignite) could well just add fuel to the festivities.

Best use fo this box I can see is to just set up the motherboard for testing ... but you can do that with a regular motherboard box ... I know because I do it all the time.

Quite a handsome accessory to have sitting by your high-end TV in the living room.

@klumper : You can spray paint it or paint it. Doodle on it. Maybe buy a laptop skin and put it on. :-)

    Yuck.

But don't take this so seriously, Adrian. Think of it as just another case mod. I've seen weirder and uglier things.

@Will Farrell: I vote for inkjet printers next! Ever tried to take a one apart to clean the excess ink pads in the bottom? Now you will be able to open the box, remove the printer mechanizm clean and dry the ink pads and re-install. I like it!

  • Heh. It's a clever way to play idiots who think throwing

away a cardboard box is going to destroy the planet.

      @frgough@...

Oh please don't start the Global warming/green flame war, ok? We get it, you think its ok to waste resources, fine, but don't start spouting this crap on a blog that has nothing to do with it.

In case you are not aware, cardboard is highly recyclable.

If the box was solid metal and made to replace buying a case for enthusists, than this would be neat, otherwise this is a straight gimmic with no putpose. An untreated Cardboard box? Seriously? I don't know about others, but the first thing I bought when I was set on making a new computer was the case, than everything else. I had the PS, but only because it was bought for another machine and didn't fit in the case. This would be neat if I knew it wouldn't burn my house down if I levt my machine on all the time.

@KBot Geez, this is worse than telling a joke to someone and then having to explain it. If you don't get it, why bother replying, it wasn't meant to save the world or start a revolution, it was just a clever idea that was probably no big deal, and they thought hobbyists might find it clever, or at least a conversation piece. No need to make permanent plans for the decor, check with your homeowners' insurance, and worry about it decomposing in your lifetime, just toss it in the recycling if you don't want to use it.

  • One word Recycle!

And I am not so sure I would put any electronics into cardboard.

I have an idea.. Find the case first..

    "Rent a sense of humour."

It's supposed to be fun. It looks fun. I think they'll sell a ton of Mobos to people who enjoy life.

I am going to start marketing mods. Repackaged Crayola(tm) markers, wall paper remnants, tin foil if you really think systems shouldn't be in pizza boxes...
