ASUS to release passively-cooled Radeon HD 6770 DirectCU Silent graphics card

By | August 2, 2011, 6:30am PDT

Summary: ASUS is to release a new passively-cooled Radeon HD 6770 graphics card called the HD 6770 DirectCU Silent featuring an enormous passive cooler that is 16% more efficient than the stock cooler.

ASUS is to release a new passively-cooled Radeon HD 6770 graphics card called the HD 6770 DirectCU Silent featuring an enormous passive cooler that is 16% more efficient than the stock cooler.

DirectCU refers to the fact that the cooler uses four direct touch copper heatpipes which whisk away heat from the GPU.

This card also features Super Alloy Power design (a fancy name for higher-grade components), 800 stream processors, 1GB of GDDR5 memory, a 128-bit memory interface, and offers D-Sub, DVI and HDMI outputs. No word on clock frequencies.

Not the best card going, but this shouldn’t have any problems handling modern games, and you’ll get a great gaming experience from a fanless card.

The Radeon HD 6770 DirectCU Silent should be shipping in a few days.

That heat sink is gigantic. It'd be worth buying this card just for the penis-envy points wink

This is a passively-cooled card

I'm guessing that squeezing the last FPS out is not a priority for passively-cooled cards. More likely, it's big screen video decoding instead. So how are you measuring "performance"?

How about a passively-cooled GeForce?
@Knix96 Personal preference, I guess, but you can't lose with some of the high-level cards AMD offers. Overclocks are definitely more accessible with Dual-Bios, for one thing. Pro tip: HD6950s are software locked 6970s. Snag yourself a bargain and upgrade a 6950 with a simple firmware flash. If you stuff up - dual-bios. No problem wink

Definitely HTPC nirvana. I wish NVIDIA would come out with something similar. I've never been fond of AMD's historically slow driver updates.

That's a hefty card!

WOW, that passive sink makes it pretty hefty. I wonder if it can handle much overclocking?
@jscott418
I'd go out on a limb here and say that this card is not meant for overclockers - more for the HTPC crowd than anything. The inclusion of HDMI on all Radeons (as well as integrated sound) make this a perfect choice for them.

That being said, I don't imagine it would be too difficult to remove the shroud on this, strap a fan or two onto it, and hook those fans to a fan controller so you can hike up the frequencies. Kind of defeats the purpose though of a completely silent card.
