Question from today's Hardware 2.0 mailbox:

"I'm looking for a really good set of earphones for my iPhone. Have you got any suggestions?"

Since no budget is defined, I've listed what I believe are the best earphones ranging from $10 all the way up to $600. All the earphones listed are fully compatible with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, and all iPad models.

I've picked six different earphones in six different price ranges:

Under $10: Sony MDR-J10

A cheap and cheerful clip-style earphones, with decent sound quality and good fit. An idea pair for use in at the gym since there's little to go wrong, and when they do die, you can replace them cheaply.

Under $80: a-JAYS Four

Pick up a pair of a-JAYS Four and the first thing you notice is the distinctive flat, tangle-free cable. But there's more to these earphones that you can't see. For example, the digital, active surface-mounted MEMS silicon microphone that removes GSM/TDMA burst noise and provides wide-band RF noise suppression.

Under $150: Audéo PFE 022

Designed in Switzerland, the Audéo Perfect Bass Earphones (022) offer music lovers extremely natural and well-defined sound experience -- with some extra bass thump.

Under $200: Shure SE215

Featuring a Dynamic MicroDriver, the SE215 delivers detailed sound with enhanced bass. A detachable cable with formable wire enables easy replacement and a secure, comfortable fit. Sound isolating sleeves in multiple sizes provide up to 37 decibels of isolation and a customized fit.

Under $400: Shure SE425

Featuring Dual High-Definition MicroDrivers, the SE425 uses a dedicated tweeter and woofer for an accurate and balanced sound. Detachable cable with formable wire enables easy replacement and secure, comfortable fit. Sound Isolating sleeves in multiple sizes provide up to 37 decibels of isolation.

  • How about bluetooth headphones?

AKH, could you do a summary of bluetooth headphones? I want something very mobile, good for music, with at least 4 hours of battery life (8 would be fantastic). When I looked last year, the best of the best were still pretty bad. A brief search shows things haven't changed much but maybe I'm missing out on some lesser known models.

    Thanks

    • Do you really want a "radiating" device on your head

      for hours a day??

      • By that argument...

Watch out for - The mains cabling in your house, and the light bulbs over your head.
Or take the homeopathic route - a small dose of something similar to the thing killing you, will "cure" you. So mobile phones are the homeopathic cure for radiation poisoning...

  • This list isn't good...

If you're only talking ear buds then maybe but if you start talking about Earphones and there are a few models of Sennheiser cans that beat many of these.
