A month ago I wrote about a bug affecting BlackBerry’s Bold 9900 and 9930 handsets that cause them to be bricked when the battery discharges down to less than 10% and they are then charged overnight. A month on and the problem is still not fixed.
The problem date back further than January of this year. Back in November of 2011 RIM acknowledged the existence of this bug, claiming that a ‘limited number of customers have reported an issue where their device does not power on.’ A fix was promised, and one was delivered, but it seems that the fix didn’t nail the bug properly as users are still complaining of bricked handsets following the update, and that upgrading to OS 7.1 doesn’t help alleviate the situation.
Some users are going through handsets at the rate of knots due to this problem:
I recieved my 4th 9930 yesterday from Verizon(refurbished). Charged it and am waiting for it to show “Battery too low for radio use” to see if it bricks again.
For a business-class handset, this kind of poor response to such a serious problem is unacceptable.
