• Not tempting at all

Considering the Playbook doesn't work without a blackberry, you would need 3 blackberries to really take advantage of this offer.

While I suppose this might be good for small businesses and big families where everyone has blackberries, there simply aren't many people that could truly take full advantage of this offer.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the only smart tablet purchase is the purchase of an iPad. All other tablets are inferior. Not just a little inferior but vastly inferior.

It is a sick market. We all lose.

@toddybottom Your post smacks of fanboyism. At least get your facts right. The Playbook does work and can run apps on its own. It can also use wi-fi for internet access. The only thing a blackberry is required for is as a tether for blackberry email and data plan access.

toddybottom is not a fanboy; on the contrary, he's an Apple hateboy. He makes a habit of over-the-top postings (under several different names), usually ending each with some phrase he thinks is clever. In much the same way that a three year old will watch the same movie over and over, he sticks with his catchphrase, be it "It is a sick market. We all lose." or "Cue the double standards."

• Did Playbook get a built in mail client?

@TBone2k
My understanding was that this was slated for the next release of Playbook. A release that has just been delayed.

Regardless, are you going to claim that Playbook is competitive with iPad? You show me your proof and then I'll show you mine. I'll even tell you in advance what my proof is. It involves profits and sales figure comparisons. It isn't pretty for RIM. It is very pretty for Apple.

• Apple hateboy?

What are you on about? I have several Apple products. I think Apple has done fantastically well and have never posted otherwise. I think the market is sick, yes, but I don't think Apple is sick.

Sorry you don't like my point of view but that is more your problem than mine.

The smartphone and tablet markets are sick. We would all be better off if there was better competition. But there isn't and I fear it is too late for that to change any time soon. I think we will be stuck with this sick market for 20 years. We all lose.

To be fair though, I'll give you the same challenge I've given others. I'll warn you though, they've all failed.
I wrote this above: " the only smart tablet purchase is the purchase of an iPad. All other tablets are inferior"
Someone comes up to you and tells you they are interested in buying a tablet. Their budget is $500 give or take $100. Please give me a list of requirements that this person would have to come to you with in order for you to suggest that they buy anything other than an iPad.

When there is only 1 rational choice for a product in a market, that is not a competitive market. It is a sick market. There is only 1 rational choice for a tablet in the tablet market (many have called it the iPad market). That is a sick market. We do not have real choice in this market. We would all be better off if we had real choice of several really good alternatives. We do not. We all lose.

Wow. How is this good competition for the iPad?

Agreed - which is one reason why this is no temptation for me at all.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the only smart tablet purchase is the purchase of an iPad. All other tablets are inferior. Not just a little inferior but vastly inferior.

Not vastly inferior - perhaps a little inferior depending on what one is looking for.

It is a sick market. We all lose.

And this is a sick market your iPad purchase helped to create.

@msalzberg - are you trying to say that toddybottom is actually NonZealot? Somehow I'm not seeing that...

• No, I blame RIM and MS and Samsung and HTC and Motorola and Google

@Pete "athynz" Athens
"And this is a sick market your iPad purchase helped to create."

I did what any good consumer does: I examine my choices and buy the right device. The problem is that there are no real choices. There is only 1 good tablet. That isn't my fault. That isn't Apple's fault. That is the fault of HP and RIM and MS and Samsung and HTC and Motorola and Google.

It is why I'm very puzzled when anyone suggests I hate Apple or that I'm blaming Apple for anything. Apple did what Apple is supposed to do: make the best products they can. Consumers are doing what they are supposed to do: buy the best product for them. The competition is utterly failing to give consumers a real choice. That doesn't make for a healthy competitive market. That isn't good for consumers. I don't hate Apple for that. I hate all the companies I've mentioned above for that.

I can't say for sure, but I'd guess yes.

@John Hanks
I'll give you GPS

No flash is a plus for the iPad for many so we can leave this off.

If the ports are import but obviously based on sales they aren't a big deal to the majority and the adapter is only $29.

I will give you the camera specs but who really cares about the rear facing camera on a tablet anyway.

iPad can tether to any phone that has tethering.

In case you had not heard, there is a new iOS it's 5.0 and allows for OTA updates.

I will give you playback and drag/drop but I drag and drop files to my iOS devices all the time via apps suck as Dropbox.

Your security plus for the Playbook is only relevant if you have a BB so we can drop that one.

Nickle and dime howgetsrketing only get's you initial sales, it's customer satisfaction that has put the iPad at the top.

More portable maybe but smaller size doesn't make it better for everyone so we can drop this one too.

I can only hope. We Blackberry users all have friends with Blackberry's, but the playbook isn't a blockbuster dead even at this price point yet.
