Clarification over iPhone 4 screen breakage data

By | October 13, 2010, 2:21pm PDT

Summary: So, the iPhone 4 suffers 82% more screen damage compared to the iPhone 3GS. But there’s more to that data than initially meets the eye.

So, the iPhone 4 suffers 82% more screen damage compared to the iPhone 3GS. But there’s more to that data than initially meets the eye.

I was bothered by this wording in the report:

Of these iPhone 4 accidents, the vast majority involved a damaged screen. When we evaluated damaged screen reports, we found the iPhone 4 had 82% more broken screens than the iPhone 3gs reported in the first 4 months.

Does “screens” refer just to the front surface, or the glass on both the front and back of the iPhone 4? So I approached SquareTrade for clarification and here’s what I got back:

For the report “screens” refers to the glass on both the front and back of the device.

So, while the iPhone 4 has twice as much glass, breakages over the first 4 months is less than double compared to the iPhone 3GS. That’s a good thing, and shows that the new GorillaGlass that Apple is using is more robust. This is a WIN for Apple.

But … problem is, Apple has created a device with twice the vulnerable surface (and my guess the back is more vulnerable as people are less likely to put the phone down on the screen). This is a FAIL.

Swings and roundabouts …

@Jimster480 Pot, meet kettle. People like you and Droid101 above are perfect examples of small minded haters. Are haters any worse than fanboys no matter the topic, of course not but they aren't any better either. Both are just plain pathetic. At some point maybe the haters and the fanboys came come out of their grandmother's basements and have adult conversations/debates, wouldn't it be nice.
There is another point about the cases available for the iPhone 4. By the time the 3GS came out, there were many cases available as they were the same size as the 3G. Also, the cases, including the one I used, for the 3G/S were more protective, including parts of the front surface (excepting the screen) than anything I have seen available for the 4. So, we need to look at the failure rate on the 3G, not 3GS, and also await better cases for the 4.

The back isn't a screen
taylor@... 13th Oct 2010
I wish they would have differentiated the back glass from the screen. The back glass is not a screen, so there aren't "screens" plural.
Also what percentage of iPhone 3GS users had sever damage to the back of the unit and how do those compare to the back glass of the iPhone 4? Which is how this SHOULD be compared.

Thus...the story from Squaretrade is sensationalism.

The iPhone 4 is incomplete.....

until it has a Bumper on it. I don't like cases, but after putting the Bumper on it, I realize that it's an absolute necessity on this phone--and not because of the antenna thing. It's needed because of the unprotected glass faces. Is it as pretty with the Bumper on? No, but I'll take un-pretty to cracked/broken anytime.
@Userama
Are you ******* kidding me? Wasn't the point of all i devices that they are pretty and sexy?

You apple tards amaze me sometimes.

"It has the look of an old Leica camera..." and the fragility of a Faberge egg.

Sorry Apple, we are holding off on upgrading our existing iPhones until you come up with a phone that can take more than very light usage and I don't need to pay the Apple tax of buying a case.

@Stark_Industries - I had the same thought and upgraded my iPhone to a Samsung Captivate. Just holding the iphone 4 was unpleasant - it has square metallic and glass edges. Cases are ugly and add bulk. My solution gave me a bigger screen and a sleek design. I am very happy to have left that Apple world behind.

its a fail either way
Jimster480 14th Oct 2010
Everything about the iPhone 4 is a fail. Those who are still defending it are nothing but blinded fanboys. it has had more problems than ANY OTHER PHONE in its class since its release. And what ever happened to those white ones???

@Jimster480 Funny thing is that all of those issues the iPhone 4 has are completely overblown and you guys who hate Apple/ iPhone so much simply go with those overblown reports without any sort of thought...

And with a 97% customer satisfaction rate (based on a 3% return rate indicating that those purchasers were unsatisfied with the iPhone 4) I just do not see where everything about the iPhone 4 is a fail.

And I'm not a blind fanboy by any stretch... Apple and iPhone do have faults - those faults are just overblown and sensationalized by the tech media and Apple Haters...

@athynz while i do agree with yoyr statement that these reports are vastly overblown, I must also agree that apple dropped the ball on the iphone 4 which is why i went back to my 3gs as it is much more reliable and trouble free.
