Boffins at Consumer Reports have whipped out their digital calipers and compared the new white iPhone 4 to the black iPhone 4 ... and found no difference.

So, what's going on here? Is it that some people can't use digital calipers correctly, or are there 'thicker' white iPhone 4 handsets out there?

  • I think what they have in that photo

Is a good example of "blooming artifact" that happens with digital imaging. You'll notice how the top edge of the while phone looks "fuzzy" while the black is nice and sharp.

I think the whole issue is a good example of a blooming storm in a teacup!

The white iPhone while not actually thicker is considerably faster. Just like the Tangerine model old iMacs.

  • So maybe, just maybe

Phil Shiller was right after all? The Anti-Apple brigade is trying hard to find issues. in the absence of issues, they will make up issues. Sounds about right. if there is nothing wrong, make something up.

Do you actually get paid to write this stuff? "Adrian Kingsley-Hughes is an internationally published technology author who has devoted over a decade to helping users get the most from technology." Self-published in US and Canada?

If you look at his thumb on the white phone, it looks like it is pressing harder. Perhaps to squeeze the white phone to be like the black phone? I see an iphone girdle coming out soon to make the white phone presentable with the black phone.

Hmmm.. since he is pressing on the sides of the device, any deformation would be in the direction of making the device thicker.

Personally, I'm going with the old "black is slimming" mantra. A white room looks larger than an equal size room with dark walls or as in this case, a white iPhone looks bigger than a black iPhone.

Adrian, perhaps the question should not be "So, what?s going on here? Is it that some people can?t use digital calipers correctly, or are there ?thicker? white iPhone 4 handsets out there?" but instead should bloggers look into what they are going to post and make sure it is accurate. SHOULD YOU have checked into the thickness issue yourself, when you, just a few days ago wrote an article about the difference in thickness? But hey, I guess checking your facts before you write something doesn't apply in this case, or to you.

We have a dozen iPhones here at work, four of us are engineers. We have three of the new white phones. We measured them all. The nine black ones fall in either the .37 - .38 range and the three white ones fall in the range of .38 - .395 range. The white iPhones are thicker with the models we got on average. Used Fowler Brand Calipers. Why this matters... don't know, and really don't care, but those are the facts.
