• Actually just followed the link

the base unit M17x starts out with an i5, not the i7, to get an i7 it is at least $150 more, and to get the Extreme it is over $1,000 more.

Can build one hell of laptop, if you have 5 grand to throw down.

• Blu-ray drives unavailable from Dell

Another problem: From what I can tell, Dell isn't offering Blu-ray drives on any unit at the moment. Depending upon whom you ask, they're either out-of-stock or were pulled due to "compatibility issues." Either way, it's a crazy situation.

The Alienware laptops are a bit too garish for my tastes. I'm waiting to snap up a Studio XPS 16, but no Blu-ray, no deal.

Adrian, maybe you could look into this? I wonder if other manufacturers are experiencing the same problems? There's not much of an official word, which I find curious.

You could always get a refurbished on from http://www.ndc.co.uk/browse-Alienware_by_Dell-37.html

They've got about 30 listed with and without blu-ray drives. No Core-i's yet though. I bought mine from there and it was practically new

• Refurbished computers are great...

Refurbished computers are great, I haven't bought a new computer in
years.

Often they're brand new computers, but someone opened it and
decided to return it to the store. So you get a nice discount on what is
essentially a new computer.

Most companies treat them as new computers, you get the full
warranty on them.

• As if Dell could ship any product....

Available for purchase means available for order, just not for delivery. Dell has become completely unreliable for any customized computers since a series of terrible executives have completely destroyed their supply chain (or, how to turn a groundbreaking strength into a cripling disadvantage).

@Optimizer! and @Chastity,

Sager laptops have the Core i7 with better video cards for around $2k, that's $3k than the alienware equivalent. They also ship within a week, and aren't garish. I bought one and love it - it arrived within the fortnight from their factory in the US to Australia.

I just finished building a powerhouse for about $1800-- you might want to check what you can do-it-yourself for. (i7 965EE, 12GB DDR3, 2x1TB HDD, 2xATI 4890, DVD-RW)

The Alienware M17x and M15x have 17-inch and 15-inch displays, respectively, and processors from Intel???s new Core i7 range. car title loans
