Crash Sleuthing: Outlook crashes after IE9 install (UPDATE)
Summary: The problem started a few weeks ago. I installed IE9 onto a system running Outlook 2007 and almost immediately noticed that Outlook started randomly crashing. I half-heartedly carried out some investigation and found that Outlook also crashed when I accessed Trust Center. This wasn't my main system and the crash was intermittent enough for me to decide to 'leave the problem for another day.'
As you can imagine, I run a lot of systems here at the PC Doc HQ, and these systems all have a slightly different hardware and software configuration, so when I get a crash on one system I don't expect to see it on all systems. Imagine my surprise when several systems start messing about in exactly the same way.
The problem started a few weeks ago. I installed IE9 onto a system running Outlook 2007 and almost immediately noticed that Outlook started randomly crashing. I half-heatedly carried out some investigation and found that Outlook also crashed when I accessed Trust Center. This wasn't my main system, the logs were of no immediate help and the crash was intermittent enough for me to decide to 'leave the problem for another day.'
Fast forward to today, and two other systems start displaying the problem. The common thread ... IE9 had just been installed.
OK, time to put my deerstalker on and do some sleuthing ...
... well, actually, no, the first thing I decided to do was be lazy. Since Outlook 2007 is now old, and I had enough spare licenses to upgrade to Outlook 2010, I might as well spare myself the headache and just upgrade. Surely that would fix things?
Nope. In fact, the problem seemed much worse, which Outlook crashing on startup.
Drat!
One benefit of upgrading Outlook to 2010 is that I could now access the COM add-ins without Trust Center crashing or having to dig in the registry and disable ... well, pretty much everything ...
... which didn't help ...
Hmmm, looks like I was going to have to do some sleuthing after all.
OK, so now I have one machine running Outlook 2010 and two other machines running Outlook 2007 where Outlook is crashing, all three after IE9 was installed. Even starting Outlook in safe mode (using the outlook /safe switch) didn't make Trust Center behave.
While all three machines are different, they also share a number of similarities in terms of antivirus, add-ins and applications. But the commonality in all three crashes was the installation of IE9 ... and that all three installs were Vista (two 32-bit, one 64-bit).
So to test I uninstalled IE9 off one system ... and Outlook 2010 starts behaving itself. The I did the same on another system ... and Outlook 2007 starts behaving itself.
Now, I'm not ready to call this an IE9 problem just yet as I have more investigating to do, but IE9 is certainly a trigger. A search of 'the Internet' for others with the problem turns up zilch (that's on any use anyway), so it's not a common problem. But then three systems affected by exactly the same problem certainly doesn't exactly scream rare occurrence either.
I'm not done with this problem yet, but for now my only salvation is to uninstall IE9 and see if I can replicate/duplicate the problem on another system.
Stay tuned!
[UPDATE: We're still working away on this issue along with some folks from Microsoft. One thing we've managed to rule out is the involvement of security software in the matter (which some people had suggested might have played a part in the problem.]

Not seeing it myself.
and I have installed it on Vista and Windows 7 machines, no problems like AKH mentioned at all.
Just got new laptop at work...
Vista - There's your problem right there
Try upgrading to Win7. ;)
RE: Crash Sleuthing: Outlook crashes after IE9 install
But isn't AHK supposed to be the "PC Doctor"? And he is so useless that he cannot fix this thing himself. Gee, so much usage of crApple products and so much crApple blogging is burning the few neurons he has.
is this the new way to scare people away from IE9?
RE: Crash Sleuthing: Outlook crashes after IE9 install
Bah humbug with IE9 on Vista 32bit with Outlook.
RE: Crash Sleuthing: Outlook crashes after IE9 install
i uninstalled IE9 it wiped out all instances of IE on 3 machines reported it to microsoft with all errors it reported they responded that they could not reproduce the problem so as far as they were concerned it wasn't a problem had to reinstall windows on all 3 machines have not put IE9 back on any of them yet.
My experiences with IE9 while it was on my machines some sites to a long time to load then sometimes the pages popped up quickly sometimes it felt very sluggish and other times it was very snappy. They still have problems that need to be addressed

OS: Windows 7 64bit

Works fine with me
1) server 2008 R2
2) Win 7 x64
3) Again Win 7 x64
Outlook works fine on all of them. No issues at all, though I have outlook 2010. Not sure about 2007.
I'm not sure which I'm more curious about...
A) why do you have Outlook installed on a server?
B) why are you upgrading to IE9 on a server? Don't say because of security protocols; you're not supposed to be browsing on a server, period. And IE9 is not mainstream to be required by patch mgmt. compliance policies, yet (again, even if it was, it wouldn't matter because you're not supposed to be browsing on a server) .
RE: Crash Sleuthing: Outlook crashes after IE9 install
WoW. No-one told me I wasn't supposed to be browsing on my MS SBS - perhaps because, you DO need to browse on a server.

The problem with your solution is that it's even worse
since it's been proven so many times i don't even bother to count anymore that OS / browser ewmail client combos, like Ubuntu/Chrome-Firefox/Thunderbird or Mac OS X / Chrome/Safari/Thunderbird just don't work.
I have seen people like you "claim" it does, but you can never reproduce your "shinning example" when asked. Ther's always some excuse why you can't (video card went bad, Ubuntu is crashing because of bad sector on hard drive, ect.)
How's that?
"you can never reproduce your 'shinning [sic] example' when asked"
That's funny! Because I only use FF-Opera-Chrome as my browser whether it's on my Win 7 x64 Pro, XP x32 Pro, Mac OS-X 10.6.7, or ubuntu (FF only) laptops. Further, I use Thunderbird on all of the above as well. And yet I have had no problems. BTW DVDs play like a champ on my Mint ubuntu laptop.
I do use Outlook 2010 or Outlook 2011 as well but only for my corporate messaging and that's simply because I have to.
Is that shiny enough for you?
Trying disabling hardware acceleration in IE9
The only problems I've had with IE9 was on one computer where it crashed constantly. I suspected it was the graphics card drivers fault so disabled hardware acceleration and it's been fine since. Could be the problem for you.
