Dell hammers final nail into the Adamo coffin

Summary: Dell has finally pulled the plug on the Adamo ultra-portable line.

Dell has finally pulled the plug on the Adamo ultra-portable line.

The Adamo was Dell's answer to Apple's MacBook Air and featured a number of cutting-edge technologies - ultra-thin, ultra-portable, built-in SSD, built-in 3G. It was a cool bit of kit, but with a starting price of $2,000, it was just too much for a customers to swallow, especially given the less than stellar performance it offered.

CNET learned that the Adamo was being discontinued yesterday, but today a search of the Dell website for Adamo confirms that it's gone.

According to CNET, the Adamo brand may return later this year, falling under one of Dell's existing consumer brands (such as the Inspiron, XPS, or Alienware). We'll have to wait and see.

This isn't a victim of Apple's MacBook Air, more a victim of its own design and price.

Dell proved you can't be a 'race to the bottom' company and try and compete with a company that knows how to produce and market a quality product. Especially when Apple decides to get aggressive with pricing. MacBook Airs now start at $1K.
This same sort of scenario is being played out in the tablet marketplace, or should I say Apple's tablet marketplace. With the consumer rather than the geek community in mind Apple has completely changed the game in tablets. Reading elsewhere on ZDNet I find that Apple has used its bankroll to muscle the competition's suppliers to the point that in an odd bit of irony Apple is able to underprice the competition without making it a race to commodity. Brilliant. Dell? Not so much. I wonder if Michael has updated his resume?

@dheady@... I agree, the 'race to the bottom' syndrome is incompatible with premium. Adamo might have had more of a chance with Alienware.

  • What Idiot would buy a Premium Dell?

It's like buying Dom Perringnon at Wal-Mart....

Dell = the junkiest computers ever built. Period.

    • Dell used to have decent laptops

@itguy08 , I was happy to buy Dell laptops - until about 3 years ago. Current Dell offerings can be compared to rotting compost.
Problem is, nobody else is really that much better.

  • Just got a new Dell Optiplex at work

and am appalled at what a piece of plastic crap this computer is. The mouse fails to register half the clicks, and the keyboard is wobbly and weak looking. The fan blows all the time, and loudly. No wonder they are so "affordable."
