Dell Streak available for pre-order tomorrow - But who wants it?

By | August 11, 2010, 7:30am PDT

Summary: Dell’s Streak Android-powered handset becomes available for pre-order tomorrow, but who is it aimed at?

Dell’s Streak Android-powered handset becomes available for pre-order tomorrow, but who is it aimed at?

Here are the details:

  • AT&T will be the carrier for customers in the United States.
  • Pricing: $299.99 with new two-year AT&T contract, and $549.99 without.
  • Customers who register for the pre-sale will be able to order a Dell Streak this Thursday August 12.
  • Dell Streak will go on sale to the general public beginning this Friday.

There’s a lot that bothers me about the Streak. First, price. $300 win a 2-year contract seems very steep too me, but the $550 price off-contract seems utterly atmospheric. You can pick up an iPhone 3GS for $99 and the iPhone 4 starts at $199. $299 buys you the 32GB version. The Streak doesn’t come with anywhere near this amount of storage.

Heck, $500 buys you an iPad if it’s the screen you want, and that’s a 9.7″ screen, compared to the 5″ screen on the Streak.

Then there’s the carrier. I know that AT&T seems to be resigned to losing iPhone exclusivity soon and so probably offered Dell a good deal, but AT&T is the most hated part of the whole iPhone package, so it seems a bit boneheaded for Dell to try shoving this carrier down user’s throats.

And then there’s the OS. This perhaps is the biggest let-down of the whole package. Rather than running the latest Android 2.2 OS, it instead runs version 1.6, which is almost a year old. An upgrade to 2.2 is promised for later this year, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for it. If Streak tanks, and given the nexus of price, features, and old OS, it might do just that, then forget about an update. For those of you who think that a product can’t sink that fast, I draw your attention to Microsoft’s Kin, which was aborted after only 2 months.

I really can’t fathom out why Dell is choosing to ship this handset with an old OS on it. It seems shoddy and rushed, and given that this is a premium-level handset aimed at hardcore geeks, I think that this could be the final nail in the coffin that Dell has created for the handset.

My advice here is to steer clear of this mess for now. I’d wait for Android 2.2, or maybe even until Streak 2 …

I just got the streak yesterday and i see nothing wrong with 1.6.. i just has the samsung captivate and it has 2.1 and i cant see or feel any difference in OS, I love the streak it run very fast and it work with all the apps i had for my captivate and it a very nice screen size. This article doesn't explain why there is a problem with the 1.6 and why to stay away from it. Give me a real review with reason why it not worth buying....
Android 2.1 would have been OK. Not the latest but close. But it really needs to be selling for more like $99. Limiting it to the same carrier that Apple is using is kind of retarded. At least part of the reason (but not the only one) Android phones are taking off is the availability on multiple carriers. If it was only going to be one carrier they could have at least made it a different one than Apple is using.

I've seen the larger screen models already and my iPhone fits in my pants pocket well enough but anything larger would be a problem. Does one get the belt clip.. I'm so not into that myself. It seems like a strange mix between a tablet and a phone.

I like it.

I've got one. I really enjoy it. The screen size is awesome. If you like big screens, and like surfing the web while out and about, this is your phone. It fits very comfortably in my pocket and I really have no problem talking on it for extended amounts of time even in public. This phone is just a bigger version of the droid really. Similar pricing there also. I know Dell has been pretty lame about their marketing of this product, but I'm confident the 2.2 version will come out.

Too Expensive, too small, too "AT&T".

Epic fail.

it's it to be a phone it could very well be to big. That I think is it's fundamental problem. What is it for?

They have no clue what to build, they copy one another, add features which nobody uses, create huge numbers of barely distinguishable models. It's just a shotgun approach to trolling for customers.
Why be surprised by another Dull dud? Have they ever made anything that distinguished them from any other PC manufacturer?
@GoPower
try Alienware - a seriously ka machine lineup
(btw: its Dell)
I was looking to get one.
Then took a deep look at the design and features - some real drawbacks for me.
Then took a look at the OS - 1.6? I could root and update.
Then the price.. $299 with a two year? and the UK got it for FREE?

Skipping it. I'll wait for something else
Suggestion:

2.2
redo the UI
rebrand as Alienware

hmmmmm.......
$550 price off-contract seems on par, look at following

Droid X for Verizon, Full Retail Price $569.99
Droid 2 for Verizon, Full Retail Price $569.99
HTC EVO for sprint, Regular price $449.99 w/ 2year

It looks to me that price should not be an issue, but a $100 rebate would be nice.

The issues with the Iphone to me is the lack of customization, but I guess that what jailbreak is for. I have never had an issue with AT&T in the last five years, knock on wood.

But I am waiting for a better phone. Dual 1.5ghz and a 4.3+ screen, that would be nice.
