AMD's updated processor price list shows that the company has had to make some very significant price cuts in order to maintain competitiveness against Intel.  Some of AMDs higher-end CPUs have had their prices cut by almost a half.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • The AMD FX-74 and AMD FX-72 processors are down from $999 to $799 and $599 respectively
  • The fastest Athlon 64 X2 processor, the 3.0-GHz 6000+, is now down to $241 (a 48% price cut), making it only fractionally more expensive than the Intel E6400 (2.13GHz)
  • The AMD FX-62 and FX-70 have been eliminated

NoteAll prices per 1,000 units.

Dramatic price cuts.  Overall, this is going to be good for consumers.

Personally, Intel CPUs still have the edge on both speed and price, but if you want an AMD CPU, now is a good time to buy.

  • AMD bananas getting brown :-(

Actually, brown bananas at half-price is a good deal for banana custard pie. it's not a good deal, if say, you want a banana split.

  • AMD Price cuts

Big deal, I have seen lower prices for single unit CPUs (NOT 1000 quantity price on AMD Price list). These retail prices have been effect for at least a month. The prices AMD is getting for 1000 unit quantities must be significantly discounted from their posted price list. Check it out at www.mwave.com

  • AMD vs Intel

I'm probably not competent in benchmarking, but I can't believe that they are significant considering the fact that the stupid XP OS has so much crap in it for fixes, and so much overhead, nothing runs fast. I want a system thta turns on fast, responds fast, and doesn't give me 20 excuses why it can't shut down when I tell it to. Benchmark these.
