Enabling 'Internet Sharing' on legacy Samsung Windows Phone 7.5 'Mango' handsets

Summary: Simple hack gets 'Internet Sharing' working on the legacy Samsung Focus and the Omnia 7 handsets.

Since a few people have asked me about this, I thought I'd pass on this information.

Microsoft has said that the 'Internet Sharing' feature on Windows Phone 7.5 'Mango' will currently only available on new handsets running 'Mango' out-of-the-box for now and that in the future it might be rolled out to a selection of older handset.

That sucks.

However, over on Windows Phone Hacker there's an easy way to get the tethering feature enabled Samsung Focus and the Omnia 7. And it seems simple enough:

  1. Download DiagProvXML and Samsung Tools
  2. Deploy both XAPs to your phone
  3. Run DiagProvXML and hold down on the Internet Sharing item, press Execute
  4. Close (press Back) DiagProvXML, and run Samsung Tools. Press Apply to set Auto Data Config.
  5. Your phone will reboot, and everything should work from there on it.

If that's no clear enough, there's a video:

WARNING: This is an unofficial hack. Things may well go wrong, and if they do, don't expect support!

  • Should be on all phones

If they can enable it (Microsoft), then they should do it on all handsets

    • I'm guessing existing handsets

      @PriMinister

Don't have the control over the feature the carrier wants. Obviously the hardware can do it, but if the carriers can't restrict the feature then, well, we know how they feel about that.

Gotta hate the carriers...we pay and they parent us. This is why I hate idea of Smart Phones and Tablets. They seem restrictive and that's why I love my Windows Desktop and Laptop....FREEDOM!

  • But....

You need an unlocked handset for this to work. Most of us don't have that....

Far from it.......... So you're telling me the majority of users that purchase Focus's are developer unlocked from AT&T? I don't think so.

    Where is this?
    Working for you
  • XAP Deployment tool

In the video you mention that you are using the "official application deployment tool". That requires $100 to use, correct? You also mention that there are some homebrew tools. What and where are the homebrew tools? I found the Tom XAP tool but had no luck. Error after error. Any suggestions?
