Faulty first-gen iPod nanos swapped for latest sixth-gen models

By | December 21, 2011, 4:52am PST

Summary: Well, you know what happens when you assume …

Back in November I told you about Apple’s worldwide iPod nano first-generation replacement program (done because of a risk of overheating). At the time we;d assumed that Apple would be replacing the first-gen iPod nanos with refurbished first-gen iPod nanos. Well, you know what happens when you assume …

Well, it seems that Apple is replacing these old players with the latest sixth-gen models:

That’s pretty cool.

So if you’ve got one of these old players lurking in a drawer somewhere and you’ve not bothered exchanging it because you think it’s junk … well, you might want to hit that link above and see if you can get it swapped.

@non-biased. I'm not sure where your hostility is coming from. I'm not the other poster, cicerogirl. I have been a apple apple/macintosh user since the 1980's and owe my career to apple. This is not some personal attack on you or apple. I have owned many of their machines including various generation ipods. I think this replacement program was mishandled but I am glad you are happy with your replacement unit.

It's probably cheaper at this point
Michael Kelly 21st Dec
to replace them with current stock. But kudos to Apple for looking after their customers.
@Michael Kelly

Looking after themselves from potential lawsuits is more like it.
@fldbryan@... Yeah, unlike everybody else who would rather fight you and loose you as a customer.
@fldbryan@... You want to bash anything apple, it seems. This is well done by Apple. The product is about 7 years old. Tell me what other companies would do in this situation.
@fldbryan@... Really, your common sense is so blinded by the small minded hatred for Apple that you can't see the good in what they are doing? To have so much hatred for anything let alone a company you have go to have one sadly pathetic life.

Got our replacement today
mike.celone@... 21st Dec
Wife just called me and said we got a package from Apple. We had sent her 1st gen 2GB iPod Nano in and received an 8GB 6th gen Nano today.
Did they send you a box. I called weeks ago and they said they would send me a box. I still haven't received. i called a few weeks ago to check on it and they said it was still coming but could take awhile.

@mike.celone@...
@fishprinter

I just received a box a few days ago. Think of the logistics involved: It takes time.
Love them or hate them, Apple went big and looked good. They didn't need to step up anything, and they still decided to give customers an awesome X-mas gift!
@Bates_ Apple does NOT look good to those of us who TRIED to find out from them what their plan was (to no avail), and would have opted to keep our beautiful, sleek, shiny 1Gs if we had known they were replacing them with ugly, tiny 6Gs. If Apple had truly "gone big" they would have published the detailed into on the replacements and allowed their consumers to make informed choices!
@cicerogirl@... boo hoo. You're losing your 7 years old 2GB ipod and receiving the newest 8GB model. I feel so sorry for you.

Your loss
use_what_works_4_U 22nd Dec
@cicerogirl@...
I have had a 2nd gen (dropped in tub - my bad), a 4th gen (kids lost it), and now I have a 6th gen. I worked at Apple when the 1st gen came out and I have a lot of experience with them, too. The 6th is a superior product, plain and simple.

Perhaps you are one of the "fashion over function" types we keep hearing about? Eventually the battery in your 1st gen will oxidize to the point where it can't be used any longer. Then you'll be stylin' in silence. Or you could get a new, easier to use iPod for no additional cost during the replacement program time frame. Just sayin'
@cicerogirl@... Be honest, there is most likely absolutely nothing that Apple could have done that you would have been happy with right? I personally wouldn't have purchase any media player as a fashion statement but you obviously did.

Proof again that when successful companies do the right thing, they remain successful.
@da philster No, the "right" thing would have been for Apple to let people know what they would be replacing them with so that those of us who had near-pristine, still-functioning, beautiful 1Gs would have been able to make an informed decision NOT to blindly trade them in for an ugly 6G model on only a CS rep's info that there were "some" 1G nanos still in inventory! I would definitely have kept mine and will almost certainly not even use the new one... unless it will properly interface with my car audio (where I don't have to look at it)... which is unlikely since my iPod Touch doesn't!
@cicerogirl@... Wow, just wow. I guess some people are apt to find wrongs in everything. Amazing skill set you've got.
@cicerogirl@...
There's just no pleasing some people.
[Sure, cross me off your Xmas card list and see if I care!]
I agree wholly with cicerogirl. The right thing to do would have been to inform and provide options.

Apple needed to get the old batteries out of circulation, I understand this. But as long as replacement batteries are still an option, I should have retained my right to have the battery replaced at Apple's expense.

The way I feel, Apple essentially stole my 1st gen nano. Yes, they gave a newer model to me in return. But I would have preferred they refurbed my 1st gen. I don't have to explain why, that's not really the point. But trust me, I have a list of reasons.
@cicerogirl@... Since you won't use it due to fashion reasons rather than actual function reasons please donate it to a charity then shut up with the whining.
@gen'r Trust you? You have a list of reason, yet you can't list a single one? I could be wrong but sure sounds like BS to me. Of course just using the name you did I would guess you are an alias for ciceragirl to be herself up or on of the many known Apple haters who would never own an Apple product in the first place.
That's cool IF your accessories are compatible with the latest gen models. Some are not.
@raycatch9@...

Whine, whine, whine.
@gribittmep: It's ok to whine if you've got $100+ worth of accessories who suddenly became unusable.
@raycatch9@... That is the only valid point I have heard yet to have an issue with this.
Apple luv's us. How's that for managing the customer relationship!
Sticky products, sticky customer's as Steve would say!

Sadly...
wcb42ad 21st Dec
Apple supplies a box that you send the iPod to them in. However, since they won't send it to a P.O. Box, I'm out of luck as I have no mailbox at our physical address.
@wcb42ad Can't you arrange with a friend, relative or local business to have it shipped to their address?
@wcb42ad
I don't know if they do this in a big city, but in our small town the folks at the local Post Office told me to do this, since we also do not have a mailbox at the street we live:

1st name, last name
Street address, #bbbb
city name, state, zip

Where #bbbb is the # symbol followed by the PO box number.

Whenever a company cannot or will not deliver to a PO Box, then we give them the above address and the post office automatically delivers whatever item is addressed to that street address to which they won't deliver automatically to the PO Box. If it is a package that would not fit into the box, then they put a yellow slip notifying of that fact. We then simply pick up the shipment from the counter. So far this has worked every time. If you have a physical address that UPS or FedEx WILL deliver to, then you can also get service from the USPS service from those companies which ordinarily tell you that they cannot ship to PO boxes.
Although there are many people who are going to be thrilled to get a 6G replacement, there are MANY of us who are NOT happy. I sent back an almost pristine black 1G (it had been covered by clear protectors the entire time) that was working just fine), and I hate the new ones (too small and just plain ugly). If I had KNOWN ahead of time that I would be getting an ugly 6G one in return, I would have kept my beautiful, sleek 1G.

I think Apple REALLY screwed up in not telling people what they would be replaced with ahead of time so we could make intelligent decisions about what we wanted to do with our 1Gs. So for every one of you who thinks Apple "did the right thing" just because you had no particular attachment to your 1G and are excited to have a refurb 6G, there is another one of us who would have kept our old ones if we had known we would NOT get a refurb 1G back.

REALLY "doing the right thing" would have been being upfront about the replacement program details.

I'd be happy to swap my 1G nano for a 6G if I could run Rockbox on the 6G. Sadly, this is not the case. Yet I don't want my nano, which I use nearly every day, to meltdown. Ah, well...

Credit where credit is due
IslandBoy_77 30th Dec
I have no love of Apple, but I agree with those who say that the replacement of old technology for brand new is a feather in their cap. One can call it a marketing ploy or some similar "strategy" to brown-nose - and it might well be. However the short of it is that it is the right thing to do, many other companies wouldn't do it, and I tip my hat to Apple: regardless of their motivation, the end result for iPod owners is still a win. Plenty of other businesses (Asus - hope you're listening) would do well to follow suit under similar circumstances.
