these protocol-handler security settings are ignored although they're set to 'true' and so you don't receive warnings

So far, so good. Seems to be working just fine running on my G5 Mac with Leopard.

Installed it eight times between yesterday and today...five PCs with eight operating systems..

Then i opened IE7 on the windows PCs...and switched their home pages to windows update - because that's all the action they'll be seeing, if at all!

OK, My installation at the office, three computers at home, 2 friend's computers, my brother's.

Put 7 to my name then, and that's because I've been busy.

Another thing to remember is that this is only the number of times it has been downloaded and not how many machines it is on. I've only downloaded it once but have used that file to put it onto 7 machines so far.

Still impressive numbers though.

I suspect that we will have to wait over the next few weeks to see how FF3 is taken up.

Rock on, Firefox! Over 8 million DLs in 24 hours!

Most surprising statistic: Iran was one of the leaders, with over 260,000. That's more than anyone except the US, Canada, the UK, Spain, France, Germany (#2 with close to 740,000), Japan, or (another surprise!) Lithuania (over 275,000).

Now all that's left is for Guinness to validate the record.

And if you ain't got FF3 yet, GO GET IT! It runs rings around FF2, which already runs rings around just about everything else.

Fire Fox rules! No ifs, buts, or maybes.
Although FF seems very slightly faster, it is a mess. Unlike in the initial testing I did, every single add-on except one was broken by FF3. Not only that, but most of the online things I do get broken by FF3.

I happen to like Windows Live online tools, not one will work right with FF3. I happen to like the integrated login features of my MSN and Windows Live accounts, I like the Live Toolbar and Live Writer, I even use Live Spaces all of which are broken (at least partially) by FF3. It even broke Quicktime, demanding an update (after it worked the first time), which then installed more AppleCrapple I did not want.

I'm not a fan of Google (almost anti-fan), yet the search bar is installed as requisite to the browser and there is apparently no way to get rid of that.

Uninstall left junk behind, thanks goodness a System Restore took care of most of that. I still ahd to do a registry sweep, and I hate doing those because lord know what THAT will break.

All in all, as a "common man" end user (well, maybe slightly more than that, I'm the guy everyone goes to in my circle), I am quite disappointed. As that guy everyone goes to, I am actually not advising people to try FF3. If they bring it up, I will have to warn them that lots of things they like won't work right.

Google Search Bar Install
ArnoldZiffle 18th Jun 2008
Hmm, it sure didn't install any search bars on my system. As for FF3 breaking your plugins, that's the responsibility of the plugin provider.

Most of the plugins look to see what version of FF they are running on and if the Verson doesn't match they don't run. I noticed my NoScript plugin worked perfectly, now I've got wait for UnPlug.

You should be back to normal soon enough.

He means the search box
spookyone1 20th Jun 2008
He means the search box. I guess he didn't notice the drop
down with the other choices for search and manage, allowing
him to use it for most search engine you could imagine, nor
is he familiar with the usual way to customize a toolbar.

Registry issues are Windows issues
spookyone1 20th Jun 2008
I can't speak to the Windows Live problems you speak of as
I'm not a Windows Live user but I downloaded FF3 for all
four of my machines--2 Linux, 1 OSX, and 1 Windows XP
(MCE) and as far as I've seen nothing at all has been
broken. Admittedly, I have had little time to spend with
the Windows XP box, and perhaps it will prove different,
but I'm lovin' FF3 on both OSX and Ubunutu! As to
removing the search box, it is not "requisite" nor is it even
strictly a "Google" search box; if you click "manage" you
can choose from literally dozens of search engines --
choose what you'd prefer or remove the box just as you do
with almost all Windows applications to customize the
toolbar. It's incredibly simple. Right-click on a blank spot
on the toolbar, then pick up the unwanted search box and
drag it into the resulting window full of other possible
tools you can drag on to the toolbar if you like. I heavily
customize all my toolbars.

And if you're going to use Windows, don't complain that
it's hard to uninstall things without all the bits and pieces
of "uninstall junk" and registry entries to remove. That's a
Windows issue, not a FF, or any other software, issue. If
you use an OS without a registry you won't have to do
those pesky "registry sweeps."

Hempman,

I happen to like the integrated login features of my MSN and Windows Live accounts, I like the Live Toolbar and Live Writer, I even use Live Spaces all of which are broken.
I don't have many brains, but you always research add-ins and plug-ins to verify they are compatible before you install new software. Strange all the applications you mentioned were MS Products.
Maybe your friends need to find a better go to person?
Change the search to Yahoo if you don;t want Google!

Come on!

downloading Windows 95?
I did it with a dialup modem. Wow,it took hours to download.
Microsoft sent everyone who downloaded that night a free t-shirt. I still have mine.
Those were the good old days.
