Firefox 4 downloads continue to outpace IE9 downloads, despite the fact that Microsoft has started pushing the new browser via Windows Update.
Mozilla's community coordinator for Firefox Asa Dotzler posts up some information on his personal blog.
Date comes via web metrics firm StatCounter.
Dotzler offers up some fighting words when it comes to the future that IE is facing:
"IE 9 will never catch up to Firefox ... So today, and for the foreseeable future, Microsoft will be number three in terms of usage among the modern browsers."
One reason for this is clear - while IE9 only runs on Windows Vista and 7, Firefox runs on Windows XP, Vista and 7, along with Mac OS and Linux.
Still, this is an amazing achievement for Mozilla.

Still FF4.0.0/4.0.1 crashes every day when I am leaving the browser alone
So FF 4 still has to improve significantly in stability, or else it is poor.
Lets wait for FF 4.0.2 or 4.1.* versions.
RE: Firefox 4 downloads way ahead of IE9
After being a FF user for several years, I have completely stopped using it since FF4 was released. I haven't seen the crashes you have, but something just feels not finished to me. Chrome 11, and IE9 work better for me.
RE: Firefox 4 downloads way ahead of IE9
I haven't had any crashes
Since FF 3.6 plugins are separated from the browser itself, and it is not
This is really bad.
No, it starts with the underlying browser
If that has issues, then anything on top won't work as designed either.
RE: Firefox 4 downloads way ahead of IE9
But I had to go through and uninstall one plug-in at a time to see what was causing the problem. You may need to do that, too. Or switch to Chrome if that's what you're driving at.
You did an upgrade with older plugins or a wacked profile.
This is not an issue with Adblock Plus but a lot of plugins had to be rewritten for FF4. I suggest a clean install of FF4 after you clean out all the remnants of FF3 in your profile directory. Then use CCleaner to fix the registry to put the associations back. I always do this and have no trouble. Oh, backup/export your adblock plus definitions and your bookmarks to your my documents folder so you don't lose anything. 10min job tops.
RE: Firefox 4 downloads way ahead of IE9
might have a better perspective what it means to support an application in direct competition with a no-holds-barred corporate entity whose very OS platform supposedly supports the application
Pushy!
RE: Firefox 4 downloads way ahead of IE9
I knowingly installed it (even though I exclusively use FF), but most normal users will assume it is a part of the update and simply click to install. Although I don't see this action as evil or pushy, this definitely counts as pushed down the pipeline IMHO.
RE: Firefox 4 downloads way ahead of IE9
The box is unchecked by default, you have to manually check it. It is thus pretty close to impossible to install it without knowing you are doing so.
At any rate, the 'push out' comment applies to Firefox as well, because when a new update is out a little box comes up asking you to install it.
RE: Firefox 4 downloads way ahead of IE9
Thats not true. IE9 is available via Windows Update but its an optional update. You have to explicitly check the checkbox for it to be installed. Your Windows installtion is not any different from the rest of the world.
So to summarize, Microsoft is not forcing anyone to upgrade from IE7/8 to IE9. On the other hand, Firefox is definitely pushing people using 3.6 to upgrade to 4.0. Agreed, wnat to upgrade or not is totally users choice but Microsoft at least is not prompting IE7/8 users to move to IE9 on Win7 and Vista.
Amazing Adrian? In what way?
RE: Firefox 4 downloads way ahead of IE9
I think the bigger issue is that IE is INSTALLED by default, whereas people have to actually seek out Firefox. People who care enough about their browser to seek it out and install it on their own, are probably going to be more rigorous about updating said software than people who use it just because it's the default program that came with their computer.
Again, nothing surprising about that.

RE: Firefox 4 downloads way ahead of IE9
What's your point?
RE: Firefox 4 downloads way ahead of IE9
Forced? No. They an use whatever they want. If they want IE9 then they have to upgrade to a supported platform.
So Ford and Chevy should retrofit their older cars.
Some people drive classics so they should get a free upgrade to digital fuel injection, air bags, crumple zones and over the shoulder seat belts. FF4 is like putting a Crane cam in a unsupported older car. Life does go on.
