Hardware 2.0

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes

Firefox 6 available ahead of official launch

By | August 15, 2011, 3:22am PDT

Summary: Pssst … wanna get your hands on Firefox 6 head of the official launch date?

Eager to get your hands on the next version of the Firefox browser?  Mozilla is scheduled to officially launch the browser on Tuesday, but you can get your hands on it now … if you know where to look!

… and I just happen to know where to look!

Ignore the ‘first run’ screen that appears telling you that this is a beta … this is normal and Mozilla won’t change this page until the official release.

There are a lot of changes made under the hood. For example, startup is faster as users can choose whether or not to load all the tag groups or not.

Another interesting change is the way Firefox shows URLs in the address bar. Domain names are now highlighted to make it it easier to see where you are on the web.

There’s also a new permissions tool that allows users to set site-specific permissions for things like saved passwords, cookies, popups and so on. Just type about:permissions into the address bar.

So, if you’re interested, hit one of the links above and grab a copy. If anyone asks, say a friend sent you.

I've never had my browser open all day.

In fact I'm not even on the computer all day. Some of you all need to get out more.
FF 5 has is a serious memory hog, I hope they fixed that.

Uhhh.... I just got prompted for log on credentials for the FTP site.

And IE9 is blocking the file. Seems it's unsigned.

@Cylon Centurion

Put "Anonymous" in both slots.

EDIT to add:

Opera seems okay with it.

Firefox 5 did not play well with Adobe Flash on my Windows XP machine at work causing freezes. Went back to 3.6.19 works great. Hope that is fixed because I do like the look. Might go with Chrome 13 if this is not fixed

@edkollin

I hope you were allowed to be installing Firefox...
@Cylon Centurion Everytime I need to use another computer (my machine is located where they have meetings and interviews) they are usually running the latest version of Firefox so somebody is allowed to install something. If the tech person doesn't want me installing it he should take away my privileges like he does with Adobe and many other programs.
I like the faster startup, but I'm with mnkyhead. Firefox has become and even bigger resource hog than it used to be (something I thought was impossible), and I'd have ditched it for Chrome a while back if it had anything remotely similar to NoScript.
Have MERCY! It's SO FAST! I just loaded 22 tabs instantly. Then I refreshed all of them at the same time... it was instantaneous. O_o; IT'S SO FAAAAST! Finally, the Fox is back! grin
A memory hog? C'mon guys, the average laptop has somewhere between 2 and 8 gigs of ram. Most of the time that ram is DDR3. If you're really that concerned with it being a resource hog, upgrade your computer. It works fast on my netbook running 1.6ghz with an ATOM. It runs snappy on my MBA with 2GB of ram. So long as my page pops up instantly, I'm happy. Sometimes I am teathering for internet from my cellphone so having a browser that works right away without delay is important to me. This delivers. Haters gunna hate. :-P
@KitWriter The problem is not so much of "memory hog" as it is a memory leak. Some where in the Firefox code has had memory leak issues for a while. Some days I browse the internet all day with about 20 tabs open and Firefox will slowly take more memory. I have had it reach 6gb on this computer!

@Kruge

Mmm. Same. In fact when I use Firefox all day, I find that I have to close out the browser every few hours to gain back lost performance.
@Kruge I can certainly believe there is a leak, but in the Linux version I use most of the time, I can run for days with several windows/tabs open without seeing the problem you describe.

I haven't been using the WinXP version that much latesy, so I can't say for sure about that.
@Kruge Whoa. I've NEVER had that problem. I'm using the mac version and the android version... I've used the Windows version on my laptop but... it's a 32bit version. If you're using 6gb, I'm assuming you're using the 64bit version... could it be a problem with the 64bit version? That's insane. I run gauges and widgets galore and monitor stuff like that and have NEVER seen it get that crazy... no where near it in fact. Wow. Just... wow

Now do I want to download it today or wait for the announcement tomorrow. Decisions, decisions.
If they've screwed up the UI the way they did in 5, I may not upgrade at all. They had a good thing going, then, like MS and Office 2010, they, for no readily apparent reason, moved everything, hid half of it, and generally made using it a PITA. I've got buttons scattered all over the place that should be together, things I do all the time that are hidden 2 levels deep in menus...who is responsible for this mess? Me...I "upgraded"...

No apparent reason?

@plonk@...

Then move everything back. The UI is fully customizable. But you should always be upgrading, especially if you're a heavy user of the browser. Versions 3.x, 4.x, and now 5.x are all unsupported. Kinda ******, I know, but you really don't want to get caught with your pants down.
@plonk@... Don't take the blame so easily. Put it wher eit REALLY belongs -- Mozilla. They need to clean house over there, their decision making in recent years has been abysmal.

Yes, it IS abysmal to force all these pointless UI changes on us by insisting that we upgrade to get the latest security. They should either forego the UI thrashing, or let us do security upgrades independently, like WindowsXP did for years. But some flaming idiot at Mozilla has decided that playing around with half-baked UI ideas is more important than usability.
Do you know if it supports HP's fingerprint scanner? V4 included it; I cannot find it for V5 and I am hoping they have incorporated it for V6.

@slwalls I doubt it does, the DigitalPersona developers seem to have gotten sluggish in developing compatible versions of the addon. Either that or they just removed FlamingFox from their list as IE 9 still supports it completely plain
What's the rush? I am tired of having to wait several weeks after each Firefox release for the AddOn authors to catch up and write new versions that work with the latest FF release.

Now I heard rumors that Mozilla was going to fix this problem, but I still had the problem when I loaded FF4, so I am in no hurry to inconvenience myself again.

Much Better
MichaelWells 15th Aug
I have been using the beta for a bit now and I like it much better than 5. It truly launches much faster and works better.
