Yesterday I showed you how to get your hands on Firefox 6 ahead of the official release, today Mozilla officially unveils the browser.

Here's a list of what's new:

  • The address bar now highlights the domain of the website you're visiting
  • Streamlined the look of the site identity block
  • Added support for the latest draft version of WebSockets with a prefixed API
  • Added support for EventSource / server-sent events
  • Added support for window.matchMedia
  • Added Scratchpad, an interactive JavaScript prototyping environment
  • Added a new Web Developer menu item and moved development-related items into it
  • Improved usability of the Web Console
  • Improved the discoverability of Firefox Sync
  • Reduced browser startup time when using Panorama
  • Fixed several stability issues
  • Fixed several security issues

    I use Real Player record videos off websites and I notice when I upgrade Firefox, its one of the first to be broken.

    Can someone tell me why this is not a dot release...did this really deserve a major version number?

    Its relevant because in 6 months when Firefox will be on version "9", will they stop support for version "6" or less? This thing will hurt IT departments who rely on a stable supported build

      @DontBeEvil The answer is because 900 years ago numbers stopped meaning anything. OpenSUSE had this debate when deciding to change its numbering scheme. People got freaked out despite the powers that be repeating ad nauseum that the major/minor numbers "don't mean anything" and never had - the next release after N.4 was always N+1 regardless of features, and the next version would have a minor number bump no matter what. Linux incremented its kernel to 3.0 from 2.6.39 or so "just because". There is no algorithm one employs to decide what to number a release, and perhaps whole number increments for Firefox just make more sense in that regard.

      @Cylon Centurion Yes that is very funny and true. Lots of times I have watched the FF memory allocation increase crazily, although it may not matter in a world where Notepad can bloat to 780MB in task manager. There seems to be a move to make superficial changes as well, and use them to up the version. -They want to get rid of the cat nurse on the Firefox Help page. (cat haters! - made my niece unhappy) One of the people active in the bugs page (excuse my terms, although I have submitted a couple bugs, I don't know much about the inner workings) implied they were one of the writers and said the whole site was going to get a re-do and be more streamlined. Ok, so removing a 16K image will steamline the site!! woo hoo! time to version that up too. There's too much hype mixed in with these version number issues. Or non-issues. Maybe it is time to stop updating and freeze what I got, it works well. I saved the cat nurse pic. for my neice.

    Realizing the aggravation I went through when I upgraded to 4.0--big mistake, and then to 5.0. Do I really want to have to go through a convoluted process to have the FireFox window look as I want it to look--complete with buttons, tabs, and menu bars? Firefox's obsession with reducing screen "clutter" has gotten way out of hand.
