Flip your iOS 4.1 iPhone into "Field Test" mode

Summary: A great tip over on Gizmodo shows how iOS 4.1-toting iPhone owners can flip their handset into "Field Test" mode which shows the antenna signal strength (or more accurately signal to noise ratio) in dBm rather than as bars.

You need to be on the latest iOS 4.1 to do this trick. Then:

  • Dial *3001#12345#* into your phone.

It's that easy. Tap on the numbers/bars to switch. To exit "Field Test" mode, hit the Home button.

  • FYI

The Field Test mode works with the AT&T MicroCell also.
I get a reading of -55 standing right next to it.

I get "your call cannot be completed as dialed" here in LA. Where did you check your own instructions and whom with ?

    • Hm, odd.

I'm in Colorado Springs, CO and it works perfectly fine. Unfortunately, AT&T sucks here, so I'm to assume that -101 is BAD.

If you put it in using the keypad and make the call, it works. But, if you put it in as a contact and try to use that to automatically dial and call, it does not. You get the "cannot complete your call as dialed" message, or the like.

What is the difference between dialing using the keypad, and the autodialer? I don't know.

Should it be a negative number? I'm getting bounced around between -83 and -96?
