Friday Rant: Quit whining about Mac OS X Lion's reverse scrolling!

Summary: It's really not a big deal. If you find it a nuisance, just switch the darn feature off!

SHARE:

Can everyone just please stop whining about the 'Reverse Scrolling' feature Apple put into Mac OS X 10.7! It's really not that much of a big deal, and if you think it is, then do something constructive about it other rather than just whine!

'Reverse scrolling,' or 'natural' as Apple calls it, basically takes the iOS scrolling paradigm and brings it to the Mac. Rather than move your finger down a document to go down, you move your finger up, mimicking the real-world movement.

Speaking subjectively, I'm not a big fan of big UI changes, especially when those UI changes don't bring any real benefit with them. With 'reverse scrolling', it took me a few minutes to get used to it, but now I'm happy. Maybe it's because I do quite a bit of work on tablets, or maybe it's because I'm not an old dog and I'm still capable of learning a new trick, but it's not a problem for me.

Speaking objectively, I can see how it can be a nuisance for people. I understand about workflow and muscle memory and all that, and how it might confuse some people. That's OK. But if you are one of those people - JUST SWITCH THE DARN FEATURE OFF! It's not that hard to do. You don't need to go delving into a 'registry' and you don't need to download a special 'tweak' app. It's right there in the settings:

  1. Open the Apple menu and select 'System Preferences'
  2. Click the 'Trackpad' icon
  3. Uncheck from the 'Scroll Direction: Natural' box
  4. Close the window

That's all that there is to it! This is just a subtle, reversible shift in the way things work, not a shifting of the Earth's magnetic poles or the dead rising.

The other thing that annoys me about all this 'reverse scrolling' whining is how much of it is beng done by people who:

  1. Haven't upgraded to Lion
  2. Don't have a Mac capable of running Lion (or no Mac at all)
  3. Haven't spent much time on a tablet like the iPad

So why should Apple do anything for these people who are clearly NOT APPLE CUSTOMERS? Sheesh ... Apple builds stuff for people to buy, it gives then options to enable and disable stuff, but people WHO BY THEIR OWN ADMISSION ARE NOT APPLE CUSTOMERS feel entitled to have a say in something that doesn't affect them.

So if you're running Lion, then either give 'reverse scrolling' a go or don't. But if you aren't running Lion, just stop whining because you really shouldn't be talking about it in the first place.

before they can pass future tricks down to you.

Yeah quit whining! He doesn't want you to talk bad about the precious Apple because it might hurt their image. Its all about the "experience" and "cool factor" and not functionality.

@LoverockDavidson <br>It does not have anything to do with "Its all about the "experience" and "cool factor" and not functionality."<br><br>Remember the typewriter? To move the paper do you recall which way you turned the platen? So, scrolling on a computer was backwards to the way folks for decades were used to doing things on a typewriter. Apple brought it back to where it was. <br><br>If Apple had not provided a choice then whining may be acceptable. As Adrian stated, it is so very easy to change it to your desired scrolling. As you have often said, nothing here just move on. <br><br>So Loverock, quite your whining and snide remarks.

@RicD_ And the entire computing world didn't realize things were backwards until Apple pointed this out to them and showed them a better way???

Maybe people should be whining instead about the change being enabled by default on upgrades rather than just new installs.

This is how CAD programs work. You move the paper, not the computer window.<br><br>By the way, look up some place using Google maps. Now move around. Hey, look! It uses 'natural scrolling.' I haven't read much whining about that.

@LoverockDavidson Actually I think the exact opposite is true, if people are talking about Apple then they aren't talking about that other OS firm who's name escapes me at the moment... oh, what are they called? They were big in the 80's and 90's - no not fsck'in Duran Duran, oh it's on the tip of my tongue... Digital Research, did DR-DOS or something, no, that's not right either...

      (I am joking of course)

Scrolling is a piece of a bigger picture in Lion. I find the new multi touch geastures so effiecient and it only seems logical to "reverse scroll". I have a track pad and not a mouse and I could see where a mouse would be kind of annoying. Fortionaley Apple gave people a choice.
An hour with Lion and you realize how ineffiecent mice and "Point & Click" is. I hate the setup work has inflicted on me and want to bring my Mac in.

@LoverockDavidson<br><br>It's ironic that instead of whining, you could have bragged about a Microsoft innovation, which appears to be your <i>raison d'etre</i>.

The deprecation of the scroll bar from control to indicator is the logical result of Microsoft's invention of the scroll wheel in 1993.

another score! I just had a thought though..I think that all the Jobs-ites should wear a lanyard attached to an iPad with their Stats and an Awesomeometer flashing, kind of like Flav's clock, but with sound and 3-d depictions of how Macs totally revolutionary and unique hardware will revolutionize computing someday..BTW, The Awesomeometer would check for the leaking of Awes-Ohms per ml of Apple devotion...or something...P.s. before you say anything about me being a Winders or linux or whatever, I prefer typewriters and A pencil and paper....Donkey's Love Apples... why do I write this stuff, does anybody read it, does anybody want to Know my opinion? NO dammit, so quite writing unless you have something truly pointless to compare ok stretcherbearer ot the late steve sleep or wha
