Regrets ... I have a few ... but my biggest one this week was not picking up a Nintendo DS Lite for myself.

Here's a perfect example of my gaming snobbery getting the better of me (you know what I mean, that "chuck more CPU cores and GPUs at a game makes it a better game", and "gaming isn't gaming unless it's done on at least a 22-inch screen" kind of snobbery).  I view handheld games consoles with suspicion, and having made negative noises about receiving a Nintendo DS Lite for Christmas, I'm now excluded from the rest of my family.  They're all sitting together wirelessly hooked together playing all sorts of games while I'm stuck on my PC.  OK, I'm stuck on my PC playing Crysis (all that time I spend on the demo was time well spent!), but that's not the point!  There's nothing like sitting around looking at your own personal set of 3-inch screens to bring the family together.

Seriously, the DS Lite is a nice bit of kit, and like the Wii, becomes more addictive the more you play.  It also comes with some really interesting and unique games that sort of redefine what you have come to expect from games.

Darn it, why does Nintendo have to come out with such cool stuff?

Any Holiday regrets?  Feel free to let them out here, there's tea and sympathy on offer ... OK, well just sympathy!

  • I regret not buying a Wii when I stood in line on BF to get my GPS

    • Sometimes I wonder if I should do that as well...

Even though I enjoy my Wii tremendously (hooked on Scarface at the moment)..

To get that extra cash for doing absolutely nothing but putting the product for sale is crazy.

Well son, the funny thing about regret is,
It's better to regret something you have done,
Than to regret something you haven't done.

  • I gave my wife one...

...last year for Christmas, and she was skeptical at first (not being a gamer). After awhile, she loved it, and gave one to her mother this year. Definitely the best hand held game unit out there. Nice thing is, it caters to more than just kids.

  • Don't worry...

Microsoft is at work merging the XBOX 360 with the Zune. This will create a gaming platform that will allow you to Squirt fellow gamers. The product is enterping pre-planning-post-marketing stage.

  • RE: Friday Rant - Why, oh why didn't I pick up a Nintendo DS Lite ... ?

Being the owner of the original DS (or DS "Phat", Tank, Brick, whatever you like to call it), I find the Lite too small for my hands. A brighter screen and smaller size don't make up for the more fragile hinges, lousy power button location and smaller GBA cartridge slot.

Still, since it's the only thing you can get, I recommend it for the whole DS experience. And pick up Mario Kart DS while you're at it. ^_^

  • Go get one now

I've gone massively addicted to playing games on my DS since Christmas. I play wirelessly with my kids on their DS's, and when the older one goes back to college, we can still play together wirelessly!!
