Garmin recalls 1.25 million in-car GPS receivers over fire hazard fears

By | August 27, 2010, 4:16am PDT

Garmin is carrying out a voluntary recall of 1.25 million in-car GPS receivers over fears the battery could overheat and cause fires.

Garmin has identified potential overheating issues when certain batteries manufactured by the third-party battery supplier within a limited date code range are used in certain Garmin nüvi models with a specific printed circuit board (PCB) design. It appears that the interaction of these factors can, in rare circumstances, increase the possibility of overheating, which may lead to a fire hazard. Although there have been no injuries or significant property damage caused by this issue, Garmin is taking this action out of an abundance of caution.

The following devices are affected by this recall:

  • nüvi 200W, 250W, & 260W
  • nüvi 7xx (where xx is a two-digit number)

Some 800,000 of the affected devices were sold in the US.

You can check if your Garmin nüvi is affected by visiting the recall website.

This is the American edition, is it not. Why can't we speak uuuhhmeeerican here. I was beginning to think that I missed something.
Why in the world would we use terms that are not in the American lexicon? If you say GPS, it would be so much more meaningful and less "affected"/snobbish.

[BEGIN SARCASM] But of course! The United States are the bright center of the universe... nothing else is valid, matters or worth a dime. [END SARCASM HERE]
By the way... The United States of America are ONLY a fraction of AMERICA, a very big continent, so Mexicans, Colombians, Peruvian, Bolivian and other are AMERICAN too, right?
The thing is, you understood what he was referring to, didn't you? And the important thing is the matter of his post, Garming recalling those defective Satnav (GPS for you) units that could cause damage to property or injure people, not if the writer used a synonym you don't approve.

For some strange reason, the "check serial number" link is broken on Garmin's recall website. I've tried it repeatedly on two different dates.
