Days after announcing a 17% price cut, Sony decides to phase out the $499 PlayStation 3 games console, leaving US buyers with a choice - buy the 80GB PS3, or buy something else.

The $499 PS3 will continue to be offered for sale until current stocks are depleted.  Sony says that they it currently has ample supply (estimates suggest 2 - 3 million) of the budget console, so if you've been pondering a purchase for a while, now's the time to make a decision.

Many are expecting that the 80GB model will come down to $499 shortly after stocks of the 60GB model have run out, but Sony won't comment on this at present.

  • With Advances in hardware...

Also the decline in the price of hardware, this seems like hardly a price cut.

Unless ofcourse HD DVD comes would with that $99 dollar player, I doubt there would be any reason for Playstation 3 to drop in price.

  • Source?

Where is your source that the price break will be dropped? If you read anywhere else that said it will drop you'll see that they retracted their statements. It will not be cut per blog.us.playstation.com
