Grand Theft Auto 3 hits Mac App Store

By | August 18, 2011, 5:39am PDT

Summary: Apple’s Mac App Store gives you easy access to a game from 2001 - Grand Theft Auto 3.

DON’T PANIC! Your time machine HASN’T worked! You’re still safe and well in good old 2011!

Ten years following its release on PS2, Grand Theft Auto 3 (GTA III) has finally made it to the Mac App Store.

GTA III has had a long arc. Released on PS2 back in October 2001, then for Windows in May 2002, then Xbox in November 2003. Then there was a long wait until it became available for Mac OS X in November 2010. Now, ten years since the original release, the game finally makes its way to the Mac App Store.

The game description on the Mac App Store comes makes it seem pretty tame, especially if you’re familiar with the title:

Crime does pay.

The hugely successful, highly controversial Grand Theft Auto franchise moves into three dimensions in the dark and seedy underworld of Liberty City.

With the freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the dark, intriguing and ruthless world of crime at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.

The game is $14.99 and a 705MB download. Your chance to grab a bit of history.

I doubt that there will be a ‘Hot Coffee‘ mod for this release.

SecuROM Withrawal
WoW>Work 19th Aug
@Ben_E Yup, Apple won't allow any other copy protection (and people think the MAS is bad!) No indications of SecuROM (the Direct2Drive version has a splash screen that mentions SecuROM in the title). Checked the ~/Library/GTA3 folder, and no indications either, but I didn't check inside the App itself (only just thought of it now).

I also copied the Direct2Drive save folder to the ~/Library/GTA3 save location and it saw the file, though I didn't have time to start up a game (I knew if I started, I wouldn't have wanted to stop). Coupled with the fact that the PS3 controller works with Macs...

Something told me to wait to install GTA3 Trilogy under Lion (I did a fresh install instead of an upgrade). Glad I did.
Heh. The so called "Hot Coffee" mod exist only on the San Andreas edition. Get your puns straight.

Classic. I wonder if this would still run under x64 Windows 7. This post makes me wanna pull it out again.

@Cylon Centurion It does. I installed in on Windows 7 x64 the other day and it flies... literally.

GTA3 Trilogy

IGN is reporting the whole GTA3 Trilogy is hitting the MAS:

http://grandtheftauto.ign.com/articles/news/8261/Grand-Theft-Auto-Mac-Trilogy-on-the-Mac-App-Store

Vice City is next week, San Andreas the following. What's nice is, the Mac versions found on Direct2Drive come with SecuROM (which I hate). These won't because Apple won't allow other copy protection as per the guidelines.
@WoW>Work They've stripped out SecuROM? Nice! The App Store goes up in my estimation - that's one over on Steam who still have multiple DRM schemes present in some games.

I think this game would do great on the ps4 at http://sonyps4.com it's always saying great things. I love GTA and have played it from the beginning so this system rules and the ps2 is still well and alive in my mind.
