I keep checking, and according to iTunes, iOS 4.0.2 is the latest (and, yes, I do have a capable device - 64GB iPod Touch). So, if iOS 4.1 is "now available for download", the question is, where in the heck is it?

Trust me, I've done it...many times over...and it does not come up. Also, not that it should have anything to do with it, but I am running iTunes 10, so I know there shouldn't be any problems.

When iPhone OS 2 and 3 came out Apple's servers were slammed very hard. I suspect that they are rolling the update out in stages geographically, which they first tried (with limited success) with iPhone OS 3 and 3.1.

I would hope that by the end of the day it will be available everywhere, but I would bet that Apple is releasing the software in a staged rollout to avoid problems like they've had in the past.

I have just installed IOS 4.1 on my iPhone 3Gs. Installation went smooth, only took about 15 or 20 minutes. From what I can tell after playing with my phone for a few minutes, performance seems to e significantly better than with IOS 4.0.2.

here's some info folks, the new os 4.1 causes problems with anybody using the bluetooth headset. i am now on my 3rd. replacement ipod touch and apple claims it's not an os problem. well i did not have these problems with the os 3 ver. and i happen to be the4 only one at this point reporting this problem. i maintain it's os 4. i have not downloaded the new os to my replacement ipod touch and all is working well. cannot believe that 2 ipod touch's would be defective..

updated 3G, 1 i4.
For the 3G - went smoothly, fastest update yet.
Minor speed increases, still slower than 3.1.3 - recommend stay with 3.1.3

For the i4 - very smooth, fast update.
Currently testing with the proximity sensor and looks like it helped - but still getting issues. Will play more.
The BT - will get to later today.
The HD pics - real eye opener. Nice. Real review - will wait for wifes feedback - lol!

Currently updating a 3GS - will report later on this one. This was jb and is no longer used as a phone. Good test subject.

So far - looking good.

Update: Upgraded the 3GS and not seeing a whole lot.
Perceptually it seems to run at the same speed before the update. Will have to put sim chip in and see if the prox sensor issue is fixed.

So far - don't see the benefit one way or the other....
stay tuned...

Update: install +4 hours.
i4 - prox sensor seems to be okay - getting occasional activity but not sure yet if me or the phone. HD camera is very nice. BT seems to work okay with JawBone II but has issue still with my Blue Ant.

3GS - (this was a jb phone) - no issues with update - still seeing same issue with the prox sensor - after a call I pull from my cheek and screen stays dark and unresponsive for about 30 secs. See no noticable diff in speed from 4.01 to 4.1. BT seems to work just fine with JawBone II and Blue Ant

3G - see a small speed increase in the camera and the map but still much slower than a 3.1.3. As no other real benefit suggest you stick with 3.1.3.

Overall not what I had hoped for the 3GS and the 3G.
The 4 seems to benefit most.

Update (next day) - will only list changes to last update.

3G - no update

3GS - still has proximity sensor issue that made me stop using it before. No fix from 4.1

4 - For both proximity sensor and BT, there has been definite improvement but not a complete fix. For BT - my JBII is fine, Jabra is fine but range is less than on my Nexus One, Blue Ant won't hold a signal consistently. For the proximit sensor, I am still getting occasional screen activation while on a call holding the phone to my ear. HD photos are nice! good job with this. Game center - will see once I use it for a bit.

Summary:
3G - if you are on 3.1.x, stay there. If you are on 4.0.x, update to 4.1
3GS - other than game center I did not see a real improvement for the 3GS. Up to you if you want to update. This does provide some underlying updates you may want.
4 - definite improvement but not a complete fix. Unless you are waiting for the jailbreak to be issued, I recommend updating.

Overall Grade - marginal

My boss installed it on his 3G and it's very snappy. The proximity sensor fix, the HDR photos, and Game Center are exciting. he also ripped dozens of hd dvds with aneesoft dvd ripper for fast streaming.
