iPhone 4

iPad 1

iPhone 3GS

Bottom line - Singnificant imporovements in JavaScript performance across the board with this release.

Just to put these numbers into perspective, Google Chrome 10 beta on my quad-core Windows 7 machine completes the SunSpider JavaScript is around 300 ms.

In my (short) windows of testing iOS 4.3 I find this new release to be robust, reliable and snappy.

Good day to confirm this comment I would appreciate T h e b e s t o f Z D N e t d e l i v e r e d your website very nice to everyone Yes, Oracle is the only one with shared-disk architecture, but that is there advantage. It means you can add or remove nodes and the database lives on. In a shared nothing architecture, if you lose a node, you lose the system. I'm sure Oracle appreciates EMC highlighting their advantage.I also desire to signal in your RSS feeds. Thank you as soon as once again and maintain up the great operate Awesome post! Something seems odd with this picture. I'm getting consistent ~195ms with IE9 RC and ~230ms with Chrome 10 on a E8500 Core 2 Duo machine. Your system should be blowing mine out of the water.

That said, on topic: more than doubling javascript execution speeds is awesome. Good job Apple, and I don't even like them.

Multiple speed factors
keebaud@... 10th Mar 2011
@Aerowind The first factor is the core speed, as the Sunspider test only runs on one core. Remember, quad is not always necessarily better than duo. The second factor is what else you have running, such as antivirus, etc. Both could show your machine to run faster than Mr. Kingsley-Hughes.

@Aerowind Chrome is based on the Safari engine - so when they worked out how to make JavaScript faster, their code has to make it back to Safari. The work the Safari team did was just to tear out any Chrome-specific stuff.

@jmschattke@... Chrome is not based on the Safari engine. Both Chrome and Safari are based on the same open source webkit engine. That's not the same thing and don't imply that Chrome owes something to Safari. It doesn't.

What's obvious is that Google has done a much better job at exploiting the open source engine than Apple.

Yes. Benchmarking javascript is important, but there's more to it than that. How about page redering of HTML not containing javascript?

Is there a more complete benchmarking kit out there?

Their speeds are finally catching up to Froyo 2.2 speeds.

Next up! They'll patch to get up to the speeds of 2.3.3 Gingerbread. Of course, we'll be at Ice Cream Sandwich by then...

@Droid101 DO you really need that to be confident that you did not make the wrong choice with Android ? Be happy with what you are, and please don't brag, especially when you are not sure about the results. iPhone 4 javascript rendering is much faster than Nexus S.

I have numbers, called "watching my phone, sitting next to an iPhone, loading the same stuff, over and over, on an identical wifi network."

Stats can be used to prove anything. Try this: use your eyes.

So how many have you watched since the update was released a few hours ago?

Hey if you ask nicely one of your iPhone 4 using friends might let you use the wifi hotspot that was also added with the update.

Only for JavaScript.
Bruizer 9th Mar 2011
@Droid101

On everything else, the code of native Apps on iOS blows away everything but NDK developed apps on Android. And since people spend more time in Apps than browsing....

You put the picture together.
@Bruizer
In the end who cares what some sandboxed results turn up. After all when you're out in the REAL World of 3G Wireless, that's where it counts most. When you're driving on the freeway using Google Maps to find your way and you miss your turn. Because your iPhone 4 just dropped it's signal. Doesn't seem to be any different no matter who your carrier is either!

But hey..... you Apple Fans always have ultra fast 4G to look forward to that's already on Android phones on multiple networks. I mean.... btw.... why is it that only Android has any ultra fast 4G phones out? lol.... I mean I guess Apple doesn't have the resources to design a 4G phone with all Billions going to waste in Steve Jobs's pockets! grin

btw..... ah gee, must have been big bully Google's bidding and request to open up 700mhz wireless and keep it from being used by any phones on Garden Walled Networks. Do you think? lol...

Actually it was Verizon and AT&T that have announced that they will not support Garden Walled Networks and instead will only have 4G Service for Open devices and not be providing 4G services to Garden Walled Networked devices. That's why only Android OS is running on 4G and that's why Android users browsing experience will always be FASTER on an Android phone or tablet than or either iPad or iPhone!!! wink

@Monarky

this settles everything, IT IS A PHONE, YOU USE A PHONE TO TALK NOT SURF The internet. it is always so amusing how many people argue about how tough there phone is. how tough is it when someone finds it on teh table right next to you steals it then buy sall kinds of stuff with it in seconds because you got this mighty fast phone attached to your mights Phone account? think about that.

Phones are for talking not apps and browsing

google networks suck hard core. a breeding ground for malware. the search sucks too, and the browser well it's nothing special, and all droid does is make google look worse. thats comming from someone who thinks you guy s morons for thinking the phone has to do everything better or as fast as a PC of any type

What would be more telling is to test the other mobile browser. Comparing mobile device against a desktop machine, is not the most objective testing procedure.

I just benchmarked Safari 5.04 on a core 2 duo MacBook

326ms +/- 6.72%

Edit:-

Just did Chrome 10.0.648.127 on the same MacBook

357.9ms +/- 7.1%

Firefox 4.0

311.8ms +/- 1.4%

The 'winner' is Firefox but there's not much in it.

@Droid101 The speed difference is negligible, if it's not a night and day difference, then please stfu. iOS web browsing interface blows Android out of the water, user interaction efficiency will easily outstrip any other speed gain.
